SUP General / Re: 2 or 3 piece boards
November 10, 2015, 12:24:45 PM
Hi Piros - it's been ages since I've posted here and no doubt a lot has changed, but this has been my experience of travel boards.

Over the years I have had several Pope Bisect Long Boards - Pre Stand Up Days. The best of these was a 9'0 Wayne Rich Carbon - beautiful board - Great Shape and good to ride as a long board. At the time Bisect had just launched a three piece stand up, not quite sure but it must have been about 2006 ish. IMHO and from my limited experience with the longboards I don't think that the system would be up to reasonably aggresive surfing in decent surf. I could be wrong and flat water and easy mellow brakes might be fine.

I have also had several ULI inflatables my favorite being a Micky Munoz prototype 8'11 single skin that never quite made production. I've had that years and would be happy to take that out in anything that I have had experience of. It has nose rocker and plenty of it. I have also had the 10' Gerry Lopez which was also excellent. (my current choice would be the 9'0 Lopez with the Wiki rail though).  Honest to goodness fun and I'm sure that the ULI guys could help with any specific requirements. I love them. PS My current home break boards are an original  Naish Hokua 9'3 (my absolute favourite), a DW 7'10 Dumpster and a Starboard 8'5 Pocket rocket if that helps put any perspective on things.

Sheeet - there's a  lot of names on that PDX list that don't appear now. Cant help but think that I miss those halcyon days of SUP. Having said that the forum isn't  'dominated' by the special 'few' like it used to be.

Gear Talk / Re: Amazing ULI FAQ 9'3"
May 23, 2012, 12:03:02 AM
Hi Alap - I bought my 9'3 FAQ over a year ago now - the board that I got to try in Costa Rica was SIGNIFICANTLY shorter -  my point was that for a small board it paddles as easily  as the 9'3 and covers distance well.

Couple that with it's surf agility and it looks like the ULI team have pumped  the magic dial up another notch.

If what I used turns out to be the final production version it's going to be a great piece of kit.

Ok - now the boards broke cover - I hooked up with Jim and Team ULI in Costa Rica in January.

All I'm going to say is it paddles fine, in fact it's better than fine - we paddled a good mile and a bit to an offshore reef - no problem.  I managed to stay with a 9'3 FAQ and a 9' hard board - I don't now if the others were going for it or not but it was not a struggle.

It's stable as - I'm 200lbs and it's fine for me - no bother.

It surfs - like it really surfs.

We are all in for a treat - brace yourselves!

Gear Talk / Re: Decisions, decisions....short or not

Personally I think it's all about optimisation. Like most here I started long - 11' Jimmy and progressed through an obscene amount of boards all getting shorter and shorter. All had their merits and drawbacks. Currently I surf just three boards regularly, my 9'3 Naish Hokua, (which I prefer to my 9'0 Hokua and my 9'0 Mana),  a custom DW 7'10, and my travel ULI Munoz 8'11. For me my 9'3 is the optimum board. It's the perfect application of the old 80/20 rule, that is it gives me most of what I want most of the time.

The DW is brilliant on smaller waves, up to chest high but for me it is slower to paddle to shifting peaks and requires just a bit more 'work' to catch waves, so although it allows me to get more out of less waves I feel that I catch fewer waves on it. So for me my optimum board is the 9'3. No wave limits, fast between the peaks resulting in more waves caught, easy to paddle in, stable and loose. But that's just me.

Another vote for ULI - top surf board
This is my 5th - I've got a FAQ and this Munoz.

Hey Boludo - where are you? Could be interested.

Best thing I have found for seized zips is vinegar. Don't be tempted to yank it just soak with vinegar and it's frees up pretty much instantly.

Dwight's Right!
I had his 7'10 shape built up and although I've only managed three sessions on it to date each one has opened up more and more possibilities, foremost of which is the use of the kick pad. I thought that the tail on mine might be a tad wide and slow the turns down a bit but step on the ridge bar and you drive round more than Tokyo Joe. Plus the front foot just needs weighting to turn 'Slow' into 'Go'  No Shuffle Required.

I'm 196lbs  - DW - 194!! Some one had a good Christmas ;)

I'm not sure what you are talking about but since you enjoyed the pictures, I'll include a few more of the model shots of Marina, our lovely intern from Germany.

OK I'll explain, two of the pics displayed  coincidentally as if Marina's legs were the wrong way round and in an infantile and purile way I found it amusing but in the 6th pic of her holding the board it looks like she has someone else's arm and legs. Probably just a trick of the lite as now that you have posted more and explained that she is from Germany she looks completely normal. Would she be from Eastern Germany?  ;D

Just admiring the chick in Blueplanetsurf's shots and trying to think of something witty to say about pics 4 and 5 hanging together like her legs are on back to front and then I checked pic 6 out and thought 'what the hells going on there?' Looks like she might have suffered a severe contortion of the spine and poor lass has a massively overdeveloped forearm if that's the case can we be sure that this Stand up thing is actually good for us?
