Flights are just getting cheaper out of Australia but the planes are getting smaller (budget airlines) with max length of 1.8m or 5'9". I really need a 2 or 3 piece board. I'm playing around doing one myself with a mate but would be more than happy to buy one off the shelf around the 8-6 mark. Appreciate any advice.

No needs to be a performance board , often surf Cloudbreak.

Thanks for that , just got off the phone to Joe (nice guy) he is looking a doing a 2 piece of his 8-5. Probably not cost effective for a one off but fingers crossed.

Then you should talk to Mark Raaphorst of SIC Maui Custom

^^^ He said he wants to surf Cloudbreak - on something around 8'6"
A 12'6" (or 14') race board might not be the best choice for that.     ;D

Hi Piros - it's been ages since I've posted here and no doubt a lot has changed, but this has been my experience of travel boards.

Over the years I have had several Pope Bisect Long Boards - Pre Stand Up Days. The best of these was a 9'0 Wayne Rich Carbon - beautiful board - Great Shape and good to ride as a long board. At the time Bisect had just launched a three piece stand up, not quite sure but it must have been about 2006 ish. IMHO and from my limited experience with the longboards I don't think that the system would be up to reasonably aggresive surfing in decent surf. I could be wrong and flat water and easy mellow brakes might be fine.

I have also had several ULI inflatables my favorite being a Micky Munoz prototype 8'11 single skin that never quite made production. I've had that years and would be happy to take that out in anything that I have had experience of. It has nose rocker and plenty of it. I have also had the 10' Gerry Lopez which was also excellent. (my current choice would be the 9'0 Lopez with the Wiki rail though).  Honest to goodness fun and I'm sure that the ULI guys could help with any specific requirements. I love them. PS My current home break boards are an original  Naish Hokua 9'3 (my absolute favourite), a DW 7'10 Dumpster and a Starboard 8'5 Pocket rocket if that helps put any perspective on things.

I've made boards into two piece, but they weren't rideable afterwards. Might be worthwhile contacting Mark, he came up with that origami two piece design a long time ago, I haven't seen one in ages, but obviously he knows how to do it, and his surfboards are great. The design locks the bottom with the shape of the joint, the clamps are just to hold everything in place. Pretty slick.

I think these guys make the Pope bisect?  The tech and hardware is pretty advanced looking now? You could always buy the " split kit"  and try it yourself.

Thanks for that Bill I give Mark a call .I just picked up a NSP/DC 8-2 x 29 second hand for $550 , so I'm going to run the saw through it and have a play myself. Should be interesting . I'll post some pics unless it's a complete disaster. Looking at cutting it just in front of the deck grip , 2/3 -1/3 join. Still not sure on joining method but looking at machining male and female joining plates out of laminated divinycell (got that off Swaylocks) and using paddle shafts as joiners with FCS style plug clamps. Would love any input from you guys before I start hacking away.

After speaking to Joe Blair his joining system really isn't that light , so need to keep the weight down.

I'm rally into this. What's the idea on FCS plug clamps? I can visualize that.

Can you link the sways article? Seems like this is way more do-able these days with all the hardware out there. Also the 2/3 1/3 idea is good, lapses stress on that joint in most situations.
