Charleston started in first but is second place for me at the moment......better housing choices and job market in Charleston it seems but I'd be living much further from the water and I'm gravitating more towards the smaller town feel of Wilmington. I haven't seen many bad reviews for either place, though. Seems like folks either love or hate each place, not much in the middle.

I've been doing a lot of real estate searching, in the low end of the price range as I'm downsizing significantly, and found that there is a really cool little  bungalow house on the 8th green of a course in Wilmington for like 150k or so.  I'm not a golfer so if I can just find something like that for the same money near the beach.............. ;D

I've only made it to the Cape Cod area once but it is also a beautiful area. I got to bike the Rail Trail while I was there, talk about a great ride. I hope to push it on my longboard skateboard someday. It too cold and expensive for me to live there but I'm definitely going back to visit. I might wait until you guys get that whole great white thing sorted out, though, before I SUP or kite up there......those things scare the bejeezus out of me. I wonder how many ESDS units a guy can wear before he gets fried?

I do the rail trail on my longboard w/paddle...its a great ride!  the cape cod canal is nice too...

While WB may not have any GW's they definitely have some gators swimming round.

Are you guys aware we have mandatory busing?  That means one child might go to the nice school down the street and your other child might get bused to one on the other side of town.. That might be why we have a private school bigger than the public school. I don't have kids, so not sure it's still that way.

We have better wind for kiting than charleston. They kite one size bigger.

For lower cost beach life choose Carolina Beach, Kure Beach, or Topsail. All within a daily communte to Wilmington for work.

Hey everybody, I'm bringing this one back from the dead.........just pulled the pin on my retirement and leave for Wilmington, NC in three weeks!!  I have rented an off-season beach house in Carolina Beach and almost done getting my kids enrolled in school.

Big thanks to all of you that replied way back when. I am so stoked.

Anybody have favorite board shops and repair guys that you deal with? I have an 8'10 blair that needs some ding and delam work done....I don't know if the shop down here is going to get it done before we split. I'm also going to be getting my kids a couple epoxy fun boards and would to buy local if the $$$ is right.

Thanks again for past and future help !!

Cool. Make sure you have a 4WD. Some of the best surf is 4WD access only. Almost every photo on my blog is from the 4WD only surf spots.

Come to the Carolina Beach pier, north side, and meet the local SUP crew. We're out at sunrise. We'll guide you.

Congratulations Jake!
That's a great area... you are gonna love it.

I bought a Dominator that was repaired by "SOD" in Wrightsville Beach.  INCREDIBLE job.  Repaired and painted to look like new.

Awesome, thank you. I will look them up.

JakeSupTX

Awesome, DW, thank you. I was about to PM you to ask who the shops/people were to try to meet and learn the local ropes with. Our place is in the 1400 block of Canal...looks to be only a few blocks away.

Dwight (DW)

1400 canal drive is a short boarders dominated surf spot. You will need to drive up to the 4WD beach

JakeSupTX

Right on, thanks for the heads up. If you don't mind, I'll shoot you a pm when we get out there. As much as I want to integrate into the area and get good at SUS, not being a tourist kook is a big deal to me.
