Hey guys, for those interested in helping out...check out these sites...

http://www.b-e-a-c-h.org/ and
http://www.surfrider.org

...maybe you know of other environment-veered organizations that the public can engage in.  Let's add them to the list.

RUSS-D

I have been a Member of the Surfrider Foundation for about 10 years now. We just got our Chapter back up and running here on the Suncoast. It's a good thing we have it now, as my favorite Beach ( the one I grew up on) Treasure Island has had high counts of Enterococcus, and Fecil Coliform EWWWWWWWWWWW!!!! Enough so that they say an advisory has been isued, but I have yet to see a single sign on the Beach warning Beach goers that they are swimming in POO!!! And it has been this way since 9/13/07. Disgusting I tell you, just disgusting. I now have to Paddle up North a ways, which is closer to Home now, but just isn't the same. And it is the only Beach around with levels high enough to issue warnings. I wonder whats up with that?
Anyways here is the link I use to check this info out, maybe you don't know what your swimming in either? It is only for Florida though, but maybe there are other sites like this out there for your area... http://esetappsdoh.doh.state.fl.us/irm00beachwater/default.aspx

:)  How about we all just pick up one or two pieces of rubbish every time we go  out?  Just one or two, not much . Every time we go to the beach  we try to pick up a few pieces of rubbish. and thats all...I think we do a little bit to help the cause, not much   BUT it's something...................

The 7P's paddle this summer is all about getting involved. We'll be raising $ for charities that deal with ocean pollution. One being the ocean conservancy.

Speaking of which, they have an international coastal cleanup planned for Sept 20th (don't wait until then though). It would be great to see the SUP community get involved.

I've been picking up trash on the beach for years. I just can't walk past it. Just think of the difference if everyone did the same. I've been talking to the environmental committee in Provincetown (one end of the 7P's). An artist in town has made a replica statue of liberty using only tampon applicators found on the beach.....pretty nasty way to get some attention on the problem.

Russ...you may want to look into where the possible sources are and talk to your legislative rep. Typically those stem from septic systems leaching into bays or CSO's (combined sewer overflows).  Not sure how big an area you are talking of but a sampling program to locate the source is the 1st step.

Exactly.  One of the coolest things about the carry handle on the SUP is it is a great place to stuff chip bags, candy wrappers, etc. that I come accross when flat watering.

Hi Russ,

I also live in Pinellas.  I sent you a PM.

I  know a thing or two about this stuff (I work in the environmental field) and perhaps can offer some suggestions on how Surfrider and/or locals can push to have water quality improved.  I'm working on projects like this through my job and would certainly be glad to help out in my own back yard.

Even Honeymoon Island and Caladesi Island State Parks - voted the "Best Beach in America" this year, and 2 miles from my home, has had some water quality warnings this summer due to crap in the water.

Oh this is a good thing.

I think it´s so important to take care about nature and the environment.
I´m a big fan of these organizations.
I´m also a member since 5 years and it´s great to help.
