Gear Talk / Re: Looking to buy a 2nd All Around Board
September 10, 2013, 10:23:48 AM
tell us your weight, height and riding style instead us making a guess on it.  but i like board 8'0 for all around in socal waves, you dont get the glide of a 10'+ board but it super fun on a wave. Since BOP is coming up at the end of this month, i would make the effort to drive down to DoHo and demo as much board as possible assuming there is going be a big swell like last year.

Training, Diet, and Fitness / Re: Cycling vs. SUP...

i lost all my cycling strength once i got into SUP surfing two years agp.  I def felt that cycling help me aerobic part of paddling and longer wave hold down.  i want to get back cycling but all the group ride usually start in the morning when its the best time to surf. Recently went to Bend OR, for a fun week trip and did a mtb ride around there, it was def fun and different than sup.  Need to get a larger frame as my mtb frame is a bit small for my size.

i got there last yr around 630-7 and got a spot but im sure it will be even more ppl this yr.  bring a grill/drinks/food, the line to the snack bar was long.  Bring an ID if you want to demo a board(one company was being a dick about it, let others demo without ask for id but me i need an id).  lets hope for a big swell like last year. :)

SUP General / Re: Tahoe - SUP drowning

i dont think shop should be held responsible for people doing stuff that is beyond their skill level and not use the safety equipment  that can get them hurt or kill.  its just common sense that if you ignore the fact if you are a weak swimmer, you should wear your PFD and add in really cold water(i swim in that lake in the Summer and it was cold) that is just asking for trouble.  If the shop provide the leash and pfd, they did the most they can to prevent an accident like this happening, it up to the user to use the safety equipment. Just like blaming the car maker for not wearing your seatbelt and got hurt from it.
i personally seen a guy almost drown on a sup b/c some dude scare him with a fake crocodile in Huntington harbor.  his pfd is strap to the board, no leash and he was in a panic mode, could barely stay a float.  Lucky someone got to him before i did.

The Shape Shack / Re: Epoxy in Microwave Trick
September 05, 2013, 02:03:14 PM
it depend on the micowave but mine only need 10sec and it was warm(dont want it hot) and flowing.  Also dont try that with either mixed epoxy or hardner, it will cure the the resin too fast and make it brittle.

If  using old epoxy(older than a yr), make sure to mix a small batch to test, sometime old epoxy will never cure and it will become a soft gel mess that is hard to remove.

i agree with DW, a good constructed sandwich board is way stronger than a single skin fiberglass construction.   Its not like that it will delam but it have a greater chance compare to a good sandwich board.  But just like any other board out there, nothing is bulletproof if you mistreat it all the time. (eg, leaving it under hot sun or leaning against a running car's tailpipe)

The Shape Shack / Re: Resin soft after 2 days?

i would scrap it out if its deep.  i like to use a small digital scale for mixing epoxy but you got to know that volume mixing ratio(eg. 2:1) is not the same as weight ratio, always check the instruction.  But usually even if i mess up my ratio a bit, it will still harden.  The key is really mixing it well.  I like to mix 3 min on the first cup, than pour on to another clean cup and mix another 3-4 min, and never have a problem.  the only problem i ran into was using really old epoxy, that never harden.  if you dont know the age of the epoxy, i would do a sample test to make sure it will cure.
