I was in the water last week and a newbie knee paddle over and ask me how im able to standup on a small SUP im riding. He begins tell me he just got the board couple days ago and how the sell told him its the perfect board for him to learn on. It was 8'?" x 27(about 100ish litter) and pretty taper nose and tail and quite thin custom performance board.  Even though he is lighter(150lb)  weight than me it is too small of a board for him to learn on to SUP surf.  I told him straight up that either he need to get a little wider/more volume board or he need to spend at least 6 month paddle in the harbor before he can surf.  It kinda sad that the seller will just lie to a newbie but i also blame the newbie for not educate himself before his first purchase.  But when i got my first SUP, i have no idea what size/width is good for me but it was during a time where high performance sup doesnt exists.

Gear Talk / Cheaper alternative to monster traction spray.
« on: May 27, 2013, 05:24:40 PM »
I was at home depot today and saw this Rustoleum traction spray sells for about $7 a bottle.  Got back home and spray on a board that doesnt have monster traction on it already.  It feel similar to Monster traction spray but for a third of the price.  Going to trying it out next weekend and see how well it works.

« on: April 18, 2013, 11:15:10 AM »
Has anyone took their windsurfing class before or know anyone? im looking for feedback.  Their 4 weekend class for $110 seems like a pretty good deal but just wondering if the instructor any good?  Im looking into windsurf or kite(probably later once i learn more about the wind, etc) on a windy day where i can't sup surf.

SUP General / Loose board and a ticket.
« on: March 30, 2013, 07:14:02 PM »
Cruising back from a small wave session and look up through my sunroof and saw the board was wobbling on my roof rack.  So i make my way to the slow lane of course it came off right when i was slowing down.  It flew off without hitting any cars and slide onto the center medium.  So i did what normal people would do, call the CHP to help getting the board back.  After he got my board, he ask for my registration and license which i found weird.  He came back minutes later with a ticket for "Dropping of load on highway".  Thanks so i got a broken board which i just brought today :o and a citation($200).  What a day.
The good thing is i had a blast surfing it this morning.  Seem like a trend for me, every time i buy a used board, it will break right after the first session.
Need to dust off my repair stand and get thing back in the water.

Random / What is it??
« on: March 13, 2013, 01:49:27 PM »
Still can't figure out what knock the SUPer over. Any idea? looks to be pretty shallow for any river monster to live in.

watch 4:00 mark.

On that note, i saw couple guys using fake alligator to scare SUPers and kayakers, of course it always backfire on them.  One SUPer almost drown from it, lucky the prankster jump in the water and save the dude before i got there.

SUP General / Close call at DoHo
« on: September 24, 2012, 09:58:40 AM »
i was at Dohney this weekend and witness a close call between a SUPer and bunch of swimmers. The wave was breaking pretty close to the shore with semi high tide and the lifeguard was nice enough to let us surf north of the Hammer.  The SUPer must be a beginner or havent done SUS for very long. He was catch a small wave that was rolling in.  But by the time he was on it, he was riding on his backside, 15 feet heading toward bunch of swimmer(mostly childern with couple adults).  I could see it on his face change to somewhat of a panic while i can heard screaming from the childern. i was expecting the worse but lucky there was a narrow opening and he shot his board toward it.  Nobody got hurt which was great.  But i had a talk with him after he paddle back out, and told him that he needs to control his board and pull out if he is ever close to any swimmers.  He could have screw everyone that day or forever if he did hit any of the swimmer.  If anyone knows that person, please tell him it was nothing personal but it was a safety thing.
The good thing was i was the first one in the water and caught most of the sets before a dozen or so SUPer start paddling out and got out when the swell was dying down. ;D  Can't wait til the next weekend with the forcasted big swell rolling in.

Gear Talk / possible a cheap paddle guard alternative
« on: September 19, 2012, 10:37:52 PM »
saw this deal on one of those deals site:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/3M-Door-Edge-Paint-Protection-Film-Kit-Scratch-Guard-Prevent-Dings-Chips-8582-/190723553359?afepn=5335869999&campid=5335869999&PID=1225267

after watch the video, i think i will warp around any paddle blade without any problem. plus it will have enough to do 4 paddle for $9.

The Shape Shack / Epoxy need for a SUP
« on: June 01, 2012, 03:38:31 PM »
im about to pull the trigger on my sup build but wonder how much epoxy is recommend  with top and bottom with this layup 6oz fg + 6oz carbon +2oz fg, maybe a addtional cf deckpatch.  I see the Resin research white paper recommend 15-18oz for 7' and under shortboard. so i can assume my 6'6 SUP is going have double the surface area but im also running more fg/cf than most shortboard.  Do anyone have an general idea on how i should calculate the resin usage?  On general repair i usually weight the glass layup and times 1.5 of the weight to get the epoxy weight since in prefect resin to fiber ratio is about 1 to 1.  My plan is to wet out all the glass and cf(for one side at a time) on a table and put it on blank and put it in a vacuum bag.

The Shape Shack / My take on 6'6 Impossible
« on: May 30, 2012, 05:24:08 PM »
So im about to shape(cnc machine, i know im cheating here, but dont have room for a shaping bay/time to learn) a copy of Starboard 6'6 Impossible. I just can't afford to spend 1600 on a new SB plus i have bunch of fiberglass and carbon and epoxy so the cost for me will be around $300. I would buy a used one but havent seen one yet. The rocker profile is 1.75 tail and 5.75 for the nose. The rail is mostly bevel down at the middle point to sharp at the end. The center of gravity/ thickest point of the rail is 3" forward of the midpoint. I know the website said it have a flat concave to flat vee. But i can't seem to decide on what kind of bottom contour after reading throught the Swaylocks, going throung King board shaping post here at the zone and remember reading some from DW.  So i have options of semi stock which is mono concave to flat to vee or vees all the way from nose to tail with deepest vee right in front of the fins like Kings or flat bottom like DW.  i have sup that have the first two bottom contour but never own anything with a flat bottom. This will be mainly surf at socal beach break or at D-patch.  Any input will be nice.
