Don't be afraid to try something shorter,  I think that you will be really surprised at how stable the shorter boards are.  I have been starting guys out on the 10'4 right out of the blocks.  We had a guy out at Laniaupoko today who was a riding a 10'6 paddle sport who said that he could never ride anything under 10',  we put him on the 9'0 and did great.
