Hello guys,
as you know I have an SUP school and rental in Bali, Indonesia..
I'm now really interested in expanding in white water river SUPPING.
Do you think it will become popular? How many of you would give it a go if you have the opportunity?
We have a nice river where they are already doing allot of commercial rafting, is just a level 2 but quite nice and very scenic. I think any guys that can SUP in wave should be able to make it in this river!!!
What do you think?
Is it worth a try?

You never know until you try...

And worst case scenario, you would have a couple of inflatables in your fleet.

I agree.  A few Ullis would never be a  bad thing.  It is a great way to see the land.  I have been paddling with some new folks this summer on the Yampa river here in CO ( I am the veteran because I have a whopping 1 year of paddling).  People that have river knowledge pick it up really fast and others a little longer.   Super fun and generally safe now that the river is dropping.  Highwater is a whole different story.  Bring it on.

What name we should give to this new discipline?
SUPR - Stand Up Paddle Rafting!!!!

Looks like fun. Sounds like fun. I'll give it a go.

Please be safe. A river is no joke... it can be very dangerous. Take a swiftwater river rescue class and get familier with the dangers of rapids, currents and submerged rocks in rivers - its a whole different kettle of fish than the ocean.

Ciao Corran,
off course all things will be done properly if we decide to move on whit the project.
River is only a class 2 with beautiful scenery!
Is used for commercial white water rafting and more then 1000 raft descend every day. With people of all ages on board.
Of course you don't use a leash when going on white water?

That sounds like a great river to SUP! What's it called?

Does anyone else think that we should start a new sub-group for Whitewater SUP in this forum? The first post can be a sticky on FAQ and river safety.

When it comes to SUP on wave it is about having a board that is designed to surf.

When it comes to SUP on a river it is about having a board that is designed to be used in the river.

The Stride Airlite HD is designed for use on rivers.  It is tough enough for the rocks and it is a very easy board to paddle.  Rivers add an element of mixing currents...which makes SUP a real challenge on rivers.   The Airlite is a thick board and with edges that are not as sharp as a surf design...well it makes the board better for dealing with the river and its currents.

Personally slow moving rivers (class 1 and 2) are an awesome place to stand up...because you go from one place to another using the power of the currents as well as your own.

Like whitewater kayaking...safety precautions need to be taken...like guided trips for new paddlers and paddlers being briefed and educated on the dangers of rivers.  Not everyone want to go surfing and a river eco tour on a SUP would make for something new.  The is also alot of people that are not in as good a shape a SUP regular and having a rivers current helping to get them from one place to another makes it that much easy and they can enjoy the scenery with the drift.

Here is the Stride Airlite HD on the left and the Airlite on the right contact Stride at info@ridestride.com if you are interested in boards and they could also give you insight into the concept of a SUP business on rivers.

We have 2 Aquaglides (11-3 and 11-0) with Surfco flexfins for the river.  They both have softtops and can take some abuse.  Werner adjustable paddle with edge protection.  Class I and II offer great paddling all around Colorado.   Thinking an Ulli will be next before a...
