Looks good.. Looks fast.. I like it..  :) ... btw.. How does it go on a wave?....... Just kidding..  ;) .. No really.. How does it go catching runners or is it a flat water only board/cat/boat/whatever you'd call it.

That's awesome Mark -- I want to see what you can do with milk cartons.

PonoBill

It really DID look like a milk carton racer. I don't think we're going to be seeing too much more of that thing. I got the feeling that Mark would have traded it for an F16 at almost any point in the race. Could be an awesome fishing rig!

He's a very innovative guy....HE SEE'S SOMETHING.....This wouldn't surprise me.

Weasels wake

Not exactly an original idea, this pic was taken about a year ago here in Cali.

But still I'd love to try one.
It takes a quiver to do that.

Puamana4me

yep, the  RON House  stand-a-maran.

It won plenty of races here in So.Cal., first saw it in 2006 Hanohano ocean challenge......

Brother firefighter K. Mo.  won !

thinkin' that all the stability the multi-hulls have to offer is moot on the flats. that 's where a skinny needle of a board would werk its magic (until a boat wake comes along to clean yer clock).
whoever invented the hole... knew nothing.

Yea thats true.......and I think Mark is STEERING in the RIGHT DIRECTION.........  ;) ;) ;) ;)

There are two advantages of catamaran hulls, and stability is the lesser advantage. The displacement hull speed limitation goes away for all intents when the ratio between length and width exceeds 9 to 1. Twelve foot board, ten inch hull = 12 to 1.

noa

Hi Bill,
what exactly do you mean regarding the length/width ratio relative to speed ? it's clear that the higher the ratio, the higher the speed potential. but where is the magic ratio ?

PonoBill

For a displacement hull the hull speed is considered to be limited by waterline has length L (in feet) as  K SQRT(L) knots, where K is a number between about 1.2 and 1.4. Hull speed is the speed at which the boat has to start climbing up over its bow wave, which takes a lot more power.

When a hull has a length to width ratio of greater than 9 to 1 it is not affected in the same way by its bow wave. It may still make a bow wave, but it will be small and the power required to run over it is much lower and more linear, not so exponential.

Other factors intrude, these are not simple matters. Catamarans generally have more hull friction for example.

Imagine no sails, and 12 SUP paddlers aboard, 4 paddlers center and  4 paddlers on each hull.

We shall conquer the world.

I had the pleasure of meeting Kyle and surfing with him last week at the Ron House Malfunction down under we shared some epic waves at Currumbin Alley he's no slouch when it comes to race boards but his win on the Catamaran Hull (last year) showed that this design is way in front of a standard board speed. The gap between and second place was a country mile.
