Kanulock Board Damage

I discovered today that 105* temps plus freeway driving equals rail damage from the cables biting in.
Anyone have any suggestions how to best fix this? Thinking about filling in the divots with Solarez, but I'm sure how well it will adhere.

That sucks....i've never had any damage from mine but never done 105 deg either. Crack or just deform? A friends brand new Bark (7 years ago) had it's rails crushed when another friend tightened some straps too tight.

Deformed. I take a lot of caution in not over tightening the straps. The deforms are most pronounced up front where the board got wind loaded from the freeway.

Yeah this happened to me too, even when using a padded board bag. It was very windy though.

2rivers, not saying that this is what happened in your case but, I have seen rails get crushed by cable style straps when cinched on to roof racks without good rack pads or bare racks.  This is one of the drawbacks of most pipe insulation (for instance).  The material is just too soft and bottoms-out too easily.

I'd do a true glass repair if its a surfboard. Ive never had any luck other than a band aid to get back in the water with Solareez in the long term on the rail.

and i LOVE solareez and treat it essentially as a cure all because i am terrible at repairs.

This post makes me nervous because next week I'm taking my 14' board up to Tahoe and will be driving 65-70mph through 100+ degree area for a couple of hours. I always worry about this but it hasn't been a problem in the past. Hopefully it holds up this time!

Just put some fairly thick extra paddling where the strap meets the rail and you'll be fine.

Drove 8 hrs with 2x 14" raceboards on German autobahn at 80+ mph (no speed limit) towards Holland, but with boards in boardbags. I guess the trick is not to over tighten. It is after all steel cables that we tugging with Kanulock.

Yeah...same here...80 mph isn't unusual for me on the highway but 105 degs is. I just bring my straps down snug but not tight and have never had them even mark any of my boards.

Ditto on adding extra padding....slide your kanulocks into a 12" piece of pool noodle where it hits the rails.

my wife and I have avoided damage from following the Zone, and from watching the paddlers in our area that have been doing it since it craze hit south Florida.  Following another guy in our area who's boards stay pretty much brand new looking, I ended up getting a rubber fatigue mat from Home Depot and cut it into 8" wide strips.  We throw a strip over the top board when we load up our car, and then run our straps over that.  It has stopped the vibration marks on the boards and prevented pressure dents.  For trips around our area, we just use two straps.  For anything far where we'll be doing more than 60 mph, we put a second strap on the front.  We have those locking straps as well, but we only use them when we park the car, not while driving it.

I use lockrack but your limited to multi stack height boards. So easy to load the boards in/out. It has soft rubber base and arm grip therefore less presure on your board like the straps. I use sup double arm with 50cm base combo.

I use Thule locking straps which are similar to Canoe Lock.  It never even occurred to me to cinch down a narrow strap with a steel cable in it on my board.  I use a wide Dakine strap to hold the board then a moderately snug locking strap over it.  Not tight enough to hurt the board, but tight enough to prevent theft.

Hope you found a good way to fix those rails. If it's not serious I think Solarez would mend well when cured properly. Hope I never have to experience driving in 105°F / 40°C heat here in Europe. Good luck and let us know how it goes. 🤙🏼
