Thanks for all the responses!  I think I am going to stick with the 404 because it seems to be the cheapest and I like the look of it the best.

Anybody know if there is anywhere in Wilmington, NC to demo these boards or similar boards?

I was at the beach last weekend and riding over the sound and being on the beach go the thinking that I may be in more choppy water than I thought, especially in the sound.  I was wondering which of these boards would hold up best in choppier water, especially between the 404, Hobie, and Ron House.  What are the differences between the 404 and Ron House?  They look like twins to me.

I've had some success on the Surftech Bark 12'6" Competitor. Good secondary stability (I'm 6' and 165lbs) and the things slices water like butter!

There has got to be a reason why so many people are winning races on them, Joe Bark has just got his design DIALED!!

Do you guys think I would be better off with the 12'6" Competitor, rather than the 404 or Hobie Elite?  How does the Competitor hold up in the chop?

Take a look at our blog post comparing the production 404 12'6" vs the Hobie Elite 12'6" (2010) (the 2011 Hobie is a great improvement) and a custom Bark Dominator. 3 guys varying in weight from 158-220 pounds.

We just finished a 3 hour test of the Surftech Bark Competitor 12'6" Elite vs  the Hobie Race 12'6" x 28.875"  yesterday that we'll be posting in the next week. These are our two favorite boards by far for what you want to do. Feel free to call me to discuss. I weigh 158.

Great review PBS! Makes sense that the 404 doesn't glide very well looking at those super steep rails, but you gain some of that back in stability in rougher conditions. Also liked the Surftech 14' Dominator review, showcasing positives and concerns. You guys are doing a great job! Thanks for the info.

The Aumundson 12'6" is another to throw into the mix. More float than the Bark and a little more stable, no sunken deck, just a fast and less dollars.
