looking for a new All around board. any suggestions? south maui
« on: February 01, 2011, 04:33:09 PM »
Im 6-3 180 pounds,  intermediate rider.   I just sold my 11-6 coreban cruiser,  (a tank) and have ridden 11-0 jimmy lewis, and other similair sizes.  I live in south maui, and ride mostly smaller waves, but want maybe to get up to head high.   I  would like to get something light and manuverable, but can float me as well.  Stability is also important, because I would like to cruise some too.  Checking out PSH, Starboard, and Laird boards now, also open to a custom shaped board, maybe Kazuma?  Not sure if I want a coreban again.

Sounds like you're ready to step up to a board you'll keep awhile. Production boards are great for resale and there's some fine ones--I really like the new Naish shapes--but for a board you'll fall in love with there's nothing like a custom. I really like Foote boards, but there's also DP (Dave Peterson) and Kazuma. for that matter if he has time Jimmy Lewis makes great customs.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

I just bought a PSH 10'. I am 5'8 175lbs. Love this board. Surfs well, still go out and but in a few miles a week. Stability awsome.

Thanks for the tips.   I havent checked out Naish yet, but I heard they are a little overpriced for basically the same quality as others.    I might inquire about a custom.  There are some good shapers on island.

Hi there,

I'd check the PSH 9'2 AA or the PSH 9'6 WAA.

I am 225lbs and have been riding the 9'6 for a couple of days now and the board is amazing. I find it a little more unstable than my coreban performer 9'6 when paddling, but it definitely pays off once you are on a wave.

The tail of the board is ridiculously thin for a production board and you can actually turn on rail. The board is fast down the line, and you can turn in really tight arcs.
On the other hand, the nose has more than enough area to be a very nice noserider.

I'm pretty sure that with your weight you can go with the 9'2. I haven't tried it, but from what i've been seeing from the 9'6, the 9'2 should be epic.

Naish is a little more pricey, but you do get a bag, and deck pad on most of them so that is at least $200 right there.  I just got a Mana 10 for my "All Around" board.  I think at your height you will want something a little wider 30" - 32" but w/ your weight you don't need a tank especially since you have experience.  I think the PSH 9'6"WAA is a good suggestion or even the 10 WAA.  Mana 9'5" could be a winner also.  Best way to find out is ride / demo as many as you can...you won't find the "perfect" board, but you will be able to eliminate many that you don't like and then you can find a good compromise and settle on that.
Naish Mana 10' (currently water-logged in Costa Rica)
Fanatic Allwave 9'2"
Naish Glide 14'
Jamie Mitchell LK 12'6"

PSH $1295-$1345+$100 PSH Fins+$100 Pad+$100 Bag = $1595-$1645

Naish $1399-$1599 +$0 Fins +$0 Pad + $0 Bag = $1399-$1599

I'd say the two top brands (In my opinion) are similar. Buy what you like  ;)

If you like the idea of keeping your money on Island, my boards sell for $1300. with pad, fins, handle, and custom airbrush. I have a few used boards for $1000. I'm 6' and 215 lbs. and ride a 9-9 x 30 that works in double over ankle to double overhead.

Tried out a 9-5 Mana, which i really liked!  surfed well, and very loose, easy to turn.  Took it out to kanaha in head high conditions.   It was a long paddle and the tracking was a little poor, and I got tired quicker then usual.   (probably due to the low glide factor)  I tried out a 10-1  x 32 Hawaiian Island today, didnt like it, seemed unstable, maybe bad design?   Can't really demo PSH here in maui, wish I could.  I think Im leaning to a custom foote, dp, or kazuma.   Maybe get what I want more dialed in without having to compromise by few choices on the rack.  Anyone like koloa, focus or starboard?

Get in touch with Pierre Coetzee 808-281-7127 coreban@hawaiiantel.net.  He lives on Maui and is the Coreban distributor for Hawaii.  I rep for Coreban on the mainland US and they have some great stuff for all-arounders.  He would be more than happy to take you out on a paddle so you could try the boards.

For a superb all around board I would recommend the 10' Icon for riders of 215lbs or less or the 10'6 Rockett for anyone over that.

Let me know if you have any questions about the boards, but Pierre is a cool dude and will get you set up proper.

If I were on Maui, I'd go see Ed Angulo and have him build you a custom board.  I live in California, and still went that route (along with several other Santa Cruz locals).  My 9-11 is as versatile as they come, working great in waves 2' to 2' overhead. It has super bulletproof construction and it's really light.  I can't imagine a better all around board.

I still think back to the 11-11 Angulo we had at the board and paddle showcase in 2008...probably wouldn't be what I'd buy today with 3 more years of paddling under my belt but what an awesome board. I'd love to try some of his current designs.

Tried a 10-0 Icon and a 9-6 performer this morning.   I liked both, pretty stable suprisingly.   I think the icon is a better board for all around type surfing and cruising.
I thought it would be more tippy cause of the narrow width, but Pierre told me its about where the displacement is placed on the board.   dimensions can be misleading to a degree.   Im not just catching waves, so I think a 10-0 to 10-6 is around my range
Id like to try a angulo 10-4, if there was one around.
