Hi Zoners,

I live and deal with hot weather all the time, >100 degrees (Austin, TX) Curious to how you deal with keeping your sweaty hands/palms from slipping off the paddle? Dorky to have paddle grip? I was thinking about sanding a rough patch into paddle to deal with the issue.

Thanks Guys!

Use a little Surfboard wax

Would it stay on, given the temp in Austin >100 most days?

Board Stiff

I was just ordering some railsaver pro tape and decided to try their paddle grip tape,  so hopefully it's not too dorky!  ;-)

I almost tried the Rustoleum leak sealer that was recommended in another thread,  but I got nervous about what chemicals it contains that may not have been intended for extended contact with skin.

I, too, live in a hot humid climate with warm water. Surf wax (tropical) works but it makes a mess if you leave your paddle in the sun, attracts dirt,  and, you have to re-apply it often.

Truthfully, the remedy I found was to buy a Kenalu paddle. The shaft is not only roughed up a bit to provide good grip but is also not as thick as the Surftech paddle I was using before.

Tape may also be an option but a good paddle with a nice shaft can make all the difference in the world.

Hockey tape with a little wax is what Pono always used. I don't like it as much as he did. The RSPro paddle grip looks great, kind of like a gun grip. Haven't tried it though since all my paddles are Kenalus. You might also just try getting some of the rubber spray Board Stiff mentioned. I forget who posted the thread about using it but i think it would be pretty stable/non-toxic once dry. I haven't put any on my paddle (after my black eye I'm thinking about it though) but i sprayed some into the handle of my board and it gave a better grip. I think i'll spray some on tonight to the paddle handle and see how it feels.

Sailing or paddling gloves would help too.  If it makes your hands too hot, after you have them on, dip your hands in the water.

Or if you've got tough hand spray some monster grip on it

So you think it would be bad to super glue clothy (sorry for made up word) rope around where you grip on shaft, remove rope after it dries, leaving a rope material residue? Just a thought.

I've used the leak sealer, works like a charm. can't speak to the chemicals effect as I don't know anything about it. I'm using it with compression gloves anyways, so I'm not worried.

I use Monster paint on my paddle. Tape off the section you want and spray. Use a few light coats. It'll wear off after a while, so you have to reapply.

Don't know what they use to coat my son's hockey stick, but it seems like it would be great on paddle shafts. It has a nice rubbery grippy feel yet is very durable and extremely thin.

It's tough to find that grippy texture that isn't too grippy. My paddle transitions get screwed up if the shaft has too much grip. Still haven't found anything as good as a new Ke Nalu shaft, though even that gets smoother with time.

I gotta second
GOOD Hockey tape works but a KeNalu shaft is perfect amount of grip and slide with wet hands or wetsuit gloves

Seems like sticking things to your paddle shaft would add weight.  Paddling gloves seem better to me, and they keep your hands from getting as calloused.
