Whats the deal with those radical TOMO VANGUARD style surf sup designs?

Shared waves several times in RI with a young stud on a 5'2" Tomo. If I am on my 7'11" gotta go hang inside with kids.

He ripped on the Tomo! He had trouble during the Bertha swell, but he wasn't alone! JP biggest one is tbd on volume. Will travel to try one! Minion fangs look funky, but they clearly have a following down under.

Wardog mallet - is the tail beveled like the Hammer or strait?

Been looking at the vanguard 5'2 for kiting and to use as a surfboard.

Lots of discussion (pretty much all good) about the shape on the kiteforum.

Lot of designers hopping on the bandwagon but apparently it's not just the outline. Lots of design elements in the bottom shape.

...and, I could easily hack 8"-10" off of their noses...but, why?...;-)

because it now might fit in the bed of a truck, or inside an SUV.  BTW, I love my Sup Sports 8'*10" WD, and would love to try a Jammer/Hammer/Mallet, but availability is tough out here on East Coast.

I've built several boards that incorporated stowage space into their design and planform...specifically, for planes, boats, and autos...etc...

Increasing compactness and off-water mobility was one of the design premises of my original WD 8'10" that Starboard took into production as the Wide Point...it was also a guiding principle for the Jammer...jamming the volume into a shorter length...optimizing volume distribution...followed by the Hammer...makes them great boards to travel with on airlines...now, the Mullet takes it another step...these short, high performance wave riding boards almost take away the need for inflatables, IMO...

On the Mallet, there is a bit of beveling...but, not as much as the "Chisel Tail" on the Hammer...however, it will be subjected to evolutionary pressure like all of my designs...;-)

I personally don't care for the sharp angles and points that I see on some of these designs in the tail area...it makes them more prone to dings and increases the accident risk for heads and other body parts...so, I wanted to keep it fairly neutral on this double-ender...you know, kinda like a "Mallet"...

I didn't like the looks of Kirks S5 but that one looks awesome! I had his S rail on a previous L41 though and didn't like it.

I agree. These wide thick beasts are unwieldly so carrying and storing a short sup is soooo much easier than a longer one. Another HUGE advantage for hacking off the ends is SAFETY because less length means there is less chance of being hit when you fall off.

I lost a lot of hours of sleep last night reading through that long thread at the other forum about these boards. One of the more important things I took from it is that these "tomo vanguard" style boards can be ridden with a lot less volume than "normal" boards because of the parallel rails which extends the width a lot farther forward and aft than "normal" boards.

Here are more videos of Andrew Cassidy shredding on a 7'2" x 26 7/8" x 3 15/16" x 92L DEEP Minion. (I think I read that he weighs about 85 k.) Anyway, these videos give a good feel for what these boards can do in the kind of waves that most of us ride and I don't see any evidence of him tripping over the corners on the nose.
