Do I need a board bag/cover?

Board Stiff

Hey Zoners,

I'm trying to decide whether I need a board cover for my HRS Fanatic Falcon. Is sun/heat damage a concern with this type of construction? I generally store the board inside, so this would mainly be for those occasions when I leave it strapped to my roof in the hot sun all day at work or when I won't be going straight to/from my paddling destination. The Victory Koredry covers look like they'd provide easy and relatively cheap protection in these situations, but if the board isn't really at risk of sun/heat damage anyway, then I wouldn't want to waste $100+ on one of those.

Thanks!

I bought my Koredry Topless bag just for those times when the board is at risk from the heat. I used it yesterday for the first time, on the beach when we took a break. The sand was very hot on our feet and I thought it was a good time to try it.

I'm not sure how much it helped. I put my hand under it and the board still felt somewhat hot. I'm not sure I'd trust it on a 90 degree day on top of my car all day but I'm still testing it. Maybe I didn't give the board enough time to adjust its core temp to the bag.

I've been thinking, for long period protection, I might add a piece of felt or a blanket cut to fit or maybe some kind of corrugated board or insulation to help insulate the board better and then put the bag over it.

I think if I were going to leave my board in the hot sun for more than an hour, I would leave the vent open if possible. To me that's just as important as covering the board. Maybe I worry too much. A lot of shops leave their demos and rentals outside all day and don't seem to worry about them.

I'll let you borrow mine for a few days if you want and you can try it out. It's cut for a 14 footer.

I have a black/white checkered pattern sup that appears grey from afar - the surftech b1.  as you can imagine, it gets rather hot in the sun when left uncovered...

i bought a victory topless cover and it works as advertised. i wouldn't be surprised if it cooled the b1 by 25-30 degrees.  If you have a darker board, I'd def recommend it.  if you board is white or light, perhaps you'd be okay without.

The Koredry topless board bags are perfect for your situation.  We have the topless board bags and regular board bags too.  We almost exclusively use the topless bags due to ease of use and how effective they are.  I've left my all carbon (black) 12'6 on the car at work with the topless board bag and it's been fine.  Great for leaving the board on the beach for a little while too.  My only word of caution is to be careful with keeping your straps too tight if you leave it on the car at work.  I've seen boards sit on a car all day with straps pulled tight and they have indentations across the bottom of the board from the heat building up under them.  Not so much an issue with a bag in between the straps and board but can't hurt to be safe.

If you buy it, don't be like me; be diligent to actually use it.  I bought the recommended Fanatic board bag for may AllWave and I'm finding that it is too much trouble to take it in and out of the bag.  It's a tight fit and a pain to get the board in, and especially out of it.  I surf almost every day and it's easier to just leave it out.  I'm sure I will regret that laziness sometime.

I would like to find some sort of sock that is easier to take on and off.

That's exactly what the Koredry Topless bag is.

I'm interested in that.  The AW sits on my front patio, exposed to the elements, after every surf.  Can you put the board in those sock covers when the board is wet?  That's the problem with most bags, a wet board will get moldy and the ocean water gets rancid.  So I leave my board out to dry and by the time it is, I'm ready to surf it again.

I doubt that a wet board or a wet bag would be a problem with the Topless bags because the Koredry fabric is breathable and drys quickly, although a lot depends on where you store the board. If you leave it in a damp shady place for days, it would likely get mildewed like anything else.

What's the price range for the Koredry Topless?

I like my Koredry - easy to put on and versatile for all my boards. I use it to protect my surf SUPs in the car while at work. The only thing is that they don't travel well with the board on the roof rack - I did it once and it already started to show wear at the fins.

The koredry topless bag sounds like a great solution if a bag is needed,  but to the other part of my question,  is a bag actually needed? Does sun and heat really damage non-carbon boards like the hrs construction? I've never left one outside long enough to find out for myself.

Good question. I probably worry too much. If my board feels hot to the touch, I start to worry.

On the other hand, if it were a real problem, we'd be reading of boards in the tropics and deserts delaming, exploding and melting from the heat all the time and I've yet to hear of one.

I'm hoping someone with experience might tell us the limitations of various constructions at high temps and at what temps should we be concerned about our boards.

Glad to hear that, Ralph, as I've been keeping my eye on them.  I try to paddle 5-6 mornings a week so there's basically a board on top of my truck all the time.  I'm pretty anal about bagging (and rinsing after every use).  I'm at sea level in a relatively mild climate so I'm not pushing things to extremes, but I wouldn't go without it.  $200 to protect a $2000 board seems like a no-brainer.  For now I'm still using a nice padded zip-up bag and it takes all of 30 seconds to bag/unbag.  Just the same, I'll be very excited if Koredry comes out with something a bit more insulated/reflective.  Once this bag wears out, that'd be my choice.

I hope not since I don't bother with a bag for my Fly HRS.  :)
