Ron House coastal cruiser

I've been riding my Ron House coastal cruiser in many different conditions and situations over the past six months.  Two weeks ago I did a 7 mile downwind run with a friend, and the board worked great, catching swells and paddling very well. At 30 inches wide there's plenty of stability. I've been surfing the board in small conditions, and have had a lot of fun working up and down the beach riding waves. I think there's something to be said for this type of "do everything" standup paddleboard.  Does anyone else have experience with the coastal cruiser, or a similar type of board?

I still think my 12-6 Starboard cruiser is one of the best all-arounds ever made. I've done everything but whitewater on the board, surfed from ankle high to overhead, downwinders, raced it, and it's done the CCBC every year....although I think last year might be it's last.  A good all-around is great to have in a quiver. If I could only have one board it would definitely be an all-around.

Glad to hear good things about the Ron House CC.  I was thinking of getting something like that.  Where do you paddle/surf it? West or East coast?
How does it glide compared to a 12'6" displacement race board?  I know it's not a fair comparison, but just want to get a ballpark feel of how well it glides.

With the flat bottom, and being wide at 30", it feels different than a more canoe shaped racing board. The stability is a net positive, but the glide is less. The board still glides though, particularly downwind and on a wave face. My friend was on a 14' race board on that run I mentioned, and was a bit faster than me. But, when we traded out, and he was on the Rob House, he, being a stronger paddler, was keeping up with me paddling the race board. It's got enough volume, stability, and streamlined shape to go fast.  The coastal cruiser is 12'6" and I'm in So. Calif.

Check out the joe Blair race 12'6.  Seems to be a similar go to all around board.  I grab mine for everything.

I was thinking that the Ron House CC was going to be my next SUP. Was looking for a board I could catch ankle bitters with and it looks perfect for that. Just can't decide between this one and the PSH Hull Paddler 12'6".

Kevin

Funny, the PSH 12'6" is practically the same board! Either one would be great, I guess.

I love mine.  I there is good glide but not raceboard glide.

Mike911, if you're ever down in San Diego, you can take my board out whenever you want. (you gave me your broken paddle last year to cut down for my kiddo).

Sounds like the CC performs well, as advertised.

OCD:  Just looked up the Blair 12'6"Race board--how does it surf in small stuff?  That fin box looks way far forward--does the board track OK, or do you notice significant amount of yaw?

Geoff--Hey, good to hear from you. Hope the paddle worked out for your kid.  Thanks--would like to demo one, but am rarely that far south.  Mahalo.

I've been spending more time on my Ron House now that we're getting into a summer pattern in New England.  Really like the versatility - good on flat water, ocean chop, small waves.  Never have an excuse not to get out.  Doesn't glide as well as my old Bark Expedition, but feels more like a surfboard underfoot.

What are you using for a fin in yours?

Dietlin--how's the primary STABILITY of the RH CC compared to the Bark Expedition?  I used to own a Expedition, but didn't like it.  I didn't find the Bark to be very stable in the ocean/ chop (yes, my poor balance has something to do with it), and the 14' length was too big for surfing beach breaks. Standing in the surf zone, waiting/maneuvering for waves was too much work on the Bark.  How's the CC compare?

The RH CC seems to have less primary stability than the Bark Exp (when my wife [100 lbs] rides on it with me [170 lbs] she thinks it much tippier) , but enough secondary stability.  I used to have a Bark Exp and didn't like the way it surfed, but I only had it out in knee high stuff.  Think it had too much rocker to be surfed in small stuff.  Felt like the waves just passed under it.  For the same reason I found it good in chop.  Biggest I've had the RH CC out in is stomach onshore slop.  It surfs much better than the Bark Exp and turns quicker when setting up to catch a wave, but it's still a big board.  For better, bigger waves, I'll used a smaller stand up.  The 18" less in length makes the RH CC much easier to move around, carry down my bulkhead, etc.

Mike, it grabs lil waves no problem, good in ocean, easy going in flat water-- rails and thin nose are great in side chop.  board tracks real straight I have been using a Curtis fin.  im not versed enough in board design to explain why, but joe has it right on this board. Seems same type shape as CC and PSH 12'6.  Good solid do everything board.

Anyone out there paddled both the Coastal Cruiser & the Jimmy Lewis Mission/Albatross?  Would love to hear how they compare...  I love the idea of a 12'6 do-everything board may just sell my 12'6 race board to get one.

I've actually paddled both but over a year apart, in flat water only, & I was a total newb when I paddled the CC.

Cheers.
