For a brief, shining moment I was the fastest geezer at the battle of the paddle--the results listed me first in the stock board over 60 class. I knew Mickey Munoz finished ahead of me, but I thought his board might have been classified as a 14 or an open. But it wasn't, and the organizers discovered their mistake. they had listed Mickey as winner of the over 60 WOMEN'S class.

Ah, well, sic transit gloria mundi, and all that.

I should have listed my board as a 14--I would have had first in that class since there were no over 60 14 or open entrants. The open race (non-elite) had 270+ entrants, the elite was 70+ as I recall. I finished 90th--lost a whole bunch of places in the last half lap.

the conditions were atrocious, big swell (for the most part from the side) and winds to 25 kts. the last 200 yards there were times I thought I was going backwards. Very great event though, superbly organized. It was great fun seeing all our Maui buddies.

All in all, a really great event.

More later, for now I need to hit the sack

Good Job!  I was just a few places ahead of ya.  I know what you mean about that last upwind leg...lol
Mickey did have a fast looking board, I dont know what size it was, he finished a few spots ahead of me.
Great event, even with the howling wind...cant wait for next year.  Would love to see a surfboard class in the future.
Take Care and hope everyone enjoyed their day in Dana Point.

Yeah, I think he was on a custom Hobie that was built for the event. It looked like the same board the pro winner used, but I'm not sure. My old Starboard was pretty fast until the swells and wind made it so unstable.

What a fun event, congrats to everyone that took part.

Found a picture of Mickey. I was keeping in contact with him by following that hat. I'm sure it helped my pace.

Congrats Bro! How did you do against the various age groups in the same class?

Can't wait to see all the pics. Wish I had found some way to make it out for this one.

I'm going to have to see the if they post the race results to answer that one. I finished 90th out of 250+. My time was 1:20 and change, which gives a pretty good idea about the conditions. I normally can do that distance (4.5 miles) in 55 minutes on flatwater. I was on track for finishing in 1:12 when I rounded the last buoy (1:08 at the buoy) and hit that wall of wind and swell.  I think they called the race at about 1:50 with about a hundred folks still on the course. Don't take those last two numbers as gospel, I'm just going from memory and we all know how good that is.

So who won the 10g's?  I was not able to find full race results.  Wondering how Jimmy Terrel and Arron Napolean.

Enjoyed the pic on your site Bill.

A lot of paddlers that were disqualified ended up getting posted times. If you look at this picture of me rounding the final mark, you'll see a blond in a bikinie. She, and several others came from the other direction, but got scrored with times. I know because I had the privledge of following her through the running corral. In fact, that was one of the highlights of my race.

Hi Bill, just waiting on a new block of foam to be delivered, should be any day now and I will get stuck into this board for the testing. You said to do alternating black and yellow so is visible at sea, I'm thinking black carbon rails with gnarly tiger stripe panels!!! Oh yes, you will be the "fastest geezer".....Stuey

Hey Byron, Bill asked me to do a board to do some tests and a story for his Ke Nalu Site (is that the right spelling?) and what about Woogie got back from Hi. today and was bummed, he said he would have loved to have done the challenge! Cheers, Stuey......... P.S.  Upgraded fire insurance on factory in case you don't get board before Bill!!!!!!

Byronmaui

Stuey don't worry about me I will let Bill poach this board test thing since he is good at that.

black 'n yellow?

how about a carbon/kevlar combination? it might be the way to go. thinking straight carbon with kevlar "felt" panels on the areas that need abrasion resistance for the yellow.
whoever invented the hole... knew nothing.
