What "meaningful action" would suggest to prevent more mass shooting in the US?

"Given the self-serving way in which many reacted to the news of the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., one really has to ask gun-control advocates: "Have you no decency?"

How about giving a horrified and heartbroken nation a chance to mourn and bury the dead? How about showing some respect for the victims you claim to care about? How about giving politics, pet causes and partisan jockeying a rest until we wipe our tears?"

You are so played...
He is only reacting to the crap your team piles on at a time like this... and they do it with the full knowledge that you will deem any response inappropriate!

NRA is not responding out of respect... the media is slamming them for being silent.

See? we can't win... Alinsky has you totally correct.

My team? Just what is my team exactly? Not obvious.
If I was played it was so subtle I didn't notice and still don't see it.

What's at the root of the mass killings....we have a society that doesn't prepare kids for dissapointment nevermind failure....everyone gets a trophy, no recognition for hard work, or consequences for sloth. So when they do experience it thay aren't ready for it.  How we deal with mental health issues.....SSShhhh....don't talk about the fact that little Johnny (you know the kid...the one that burned cats alive for fun) is a little touched in the head....we have to be inclusive. Parents don't want the stigma of mental health issues associated with their family and teachers and others are not willing or able to say anything for fear of hurting feelings or being sued. We have an entertainment industry (movies, TV, and games) that schools children from the time they are old enough to use a clicker or game contoller that violence and particularly the use of guns is a great problem solver. By the time the average teenage boy reaches 20 he has killed 10's of thousands in his virtual world (that is often more real to him than day to day life and obviously always more fun). That same industry is now wringing it's hands and saying we need more gun control. Try pushing for more control over what is allowable for children to see and use and see how fast they fight that.
Quote from: pdxmike on December 17, 2012, 11:47:41 AMYou see that all the time now.  Media coverage about media coverage.  Often, it's an excuse for regular media to publish tabloid stories.  The sleazy tabloids will do stories on scandals involving children of celebrities, or maybe some sex scandals. Then the mainstream outlets follow up with "Have Tabloids Gone Too Far in Invading Privacy of Children of Celebrities?" or "Is the Media Obsessed with Sex?" then publish all the same info and photos that were in the tabloids.  You see those types of headlines all the time on msn and yahoo.   At least the tabloids are honest about it.
Quote from: supthecreek on December 17, 2012, 08:14:40 PMThe place where children need to get their strength, direction and values from is the family. A solid loving and supportive base, creates well adjusted kids that are better equipped to handle daily challenges and stress.

The only really meaningful thing that any one person can do in life, is raise good children. Period. Your job is irrelevant, your wealth is irrelevant, your successes are irrelevant... if you fail to raise good children.
Wow, an awful lot of posts from a lot of people....Americans and not....and unless I missed something every person who seems to think that  banning guns is the answer has ignored or skirted the obvious.
Getting right down to the title of the thread....Creek has had the most relevant answer while Axe and Mikes comments have been left untouched.

All of the news outlets are still in Newtown......spewing jiberish for the most part...creating...who knows what...it isn't "news" that is being reported for a few days now for the most part.......letting some other nutty fruitcake watch all of the attention.

Defenseless people rounded up and exterminated in the 20th Century because of gun control: 56 million. You won't see this data on the US evening news, or hear politicians disseminating this information. Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws adversely affect only the law-abiding citizens.

Take note my fellow Americans, before it's too late! The next time someone talks in favor of gun control, please remind them of this history lesson. With guns, we are 'citizens'. Without them, we are 'subjects'.  IT'S A NO BRAINER!DON'T LET OUR GOVERNMENT WASTE MILLIONS OF OUR TAX DOLLARS IN AN EFFORT TO MAKE ALL LAW ABIDING CITIZENS AN EASY TARGET.

Spread the word everywhere you can that you are a firm believer in the 2nd Amendment! It's time to speak loud before they try to silence and disarm us.You're not imagining it, history shows that governments always manipulate tragedies to attempt to disarm the people~
You will not hear it because anyone who tries to make that argument will get laughed out of relevance.  Without gun control those numbers would not change much, it did not make the atrocities possible  it just made them easier,  Using such obviously flawed logic just makes anything else you say that more suspect.

It is always amazing to me how quickly historical points that are inconvenient to gun control advocates are swept aside as they continue to beat their drum demanding someone else be accountable for the actions, all the while clinging to ideology that has historically proven to have the opposite effect to the one they claim to seek.

There is a principal of sowing and reaping that is in place here on planet earth...you don't sow apple seed and get oranges... you don't plant wheat and get corn...you don't teach the people, through thousands of hours of TV, video games, movies and music...evil (glorifying violence, greed, lying, slander, drunkenness, drug abuse, to be God haters, no accountability, no consequences to their  actions, self serving etc.) and expect responsible citizens as a result.

This generation is the product of a failed social experiment.
Today many claim either by word or deed to be their own god. They have bartered away a personal relationship with the true God for a man centric religion. The country has violated it's own constitution by establishing a religion of secular humanism. They have rejected the Bible and replaced it with Darwin's "Origin of Species" teaching a mans theory as fact.
They worship the creation rather than the Creator. In so doing forfited their position of manager and caretaker.... becoming subservient to the very things that were to be under their care. God gave us free will...we bartered that away for a false sense of security... promised by those that have no power to give it. Greed and fear are the prods used to manipulate. No tactic is off the table...the means justify the end. They are forever making promises that they have no intention to keep...when they lie they speak their native language.

It's easier to place the blame these horrific acts on guns than to address the elephant in the room.

when talking about this generation remember gun viollance is down.  Just because the media puts it on the air more does not mean it is getting worse.

"Evolution=Mass Murder?"

Is that what you got out of what I said?....hum...I don't really know how to respond to that ...I will let what I wrote stand on its own merit.

Pretty hopeless--a fairly reasonable bunch of people here on the zone can't come up with anything more rational than a circle jerk about banning something, arguments about what Jesus said and the intent of the framers of the second amendment, the definition of assault rifles, and some notion about how the rest of the world is so much more moral and rational than we troglodyte Americans.

Painful.

Given the emotional pain of the events we probably can't expect more, but the answer to the question of the title is "Blah, blah, blah..."

Just got back from my daughters Elementary School as she had her holiday music recital and I was surprised at the number of Parents and Grand-Parents that where actually giving the office secretary a hard time about why the doors where locked and they needed to get buzzed in after providing their names and reason for needing to enter the school !!! I kept my mouth quiet but was thinking "Are You F****ng Kidding Me...What World Do You Live In".....I'm just glad it appears every school in the nation is taking additonal steps to protect our kids....Personally I still think much more is needed, like metal detectors and an armed security guard or police detail...but baby steps I guess for now.

"This time, the words need to lead to action," said Obama, who set a January deadline for the recommendations. He vowed to push for their implementation without delay.

The president, who exerted little political capital on gun control during his first term, also pressed Congress to reinstate an assault weapons ban, which expired in 2004. He also called for stricter background checks for people who seek to purchase weapons and limited high capacity clips.

Tom - that videao is a load of crap as the exercise they did was total BS as was the guy CC in it, every single CC person I know (as well as myself) would Never tell anyone they have a gun on them or attempt to pull and fire in that same manner/situation. They are correct it's about training and second nature, as well as emotional state, not saying in every case that a good guy with a gun will stop a bad guy with a gun, but it definetly levels the playing field.

It makes a lot more sense to use big data technology to locate people who are taking suspicious actions. Of course that might be underway, and keeping the direction a secret would be an important part of implementation. But it seems to me that buying big clips, a bulletproof vest, and any of a long list of dangerous shit should spark a dive into what you are up to.

Building a big social database of people on the edge is another approach. If one person says you're a dangerous nut it would probably be low priority, but how many people would have said "take a good look at Seung-Hui Cho".

Potential for abuse? Absolutely. More effective that banning any more new guns of some specific type in a country that already has 300 million of them? Sorry, that's just feel good stuff.
