Pulled or tore something this morning...

Aloha gangy!  Stroking to pull into a wave this morning I felt a sharp pop/rip low on my right side ( the side i was stroking on), just above the hip, all the way up to my lowest rib.  Pain was so sharp it stopped me cold, knocked me into the water.  Once I struggled back onto my board I found it impossible to stroke with any power at all on that side and had to limp to shore and call it a day.  Now that Ive cooled down its actually getting more sore --when I twist, lean, sitting up, bending over--almost every movement is killing me.  I think its my Oblique thats injured.  This does not bode well for my immediate SUP future, but I was wondering :  has anyone else experienced this? and if so, what is my expected recovery time?  Also, what , if any treatments were helpful?  How about rehab and re-injury prevention?  Thanks for any help.
  Mahalo.

Really sorry to hear that.  My advice would be to ice it ASAP.  If you don't already have one, get an ice bag at the drugstore and fill it with ice cubes.  Ice the injury until it starts to get numb, remove the ice bag, and repeat periodically.  It won't cure it, but it will reduce the inflamation.  As you feel the healing process begin, start using a heating pad instead of ice.  Always works for me with minor injuries.

BTW, I'm not a doctor -- just your typical athlete.  Hope you bounce back quickly!

oh boy that sounds bad...pops usually are...rest it and ice it...find a good massage therapist to relax that and allthe mucsles around it so it can heal...lots of ibuprophen...and REST the muscles...

happens to me all the time in the hamstrings when i go skimboarding and run  jump a lot...two weeks limping around till it starts getting better... :o

My bicep tendon popped like that, needed surgery to repair and back to normal. Whatever happened to you, have it checked out and like the guys said, ice it good until you see the Doc.

have an appointment in the AM.  im all about ibuprofen & ice right now, thanks....

Let us know whats up. I do know this...the pure desire to paddle surf will heal you faster and get you back on your board sooner then you think. Good luck to you!

I think you have torn the muscle from the floating rib..It's fairly common and rest is all you can do.

Don't laugh cos that will hurt.

So don't even click on this..  http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg9/djp-1/Virals__21__369446a.jpg ..Sorry  ;D

davidjohn--ouch thanx alot for the stabbing pain!!! im gonna get even--not sure how or when but you wait....
i ended up mixing a nice dry rub for my wife to season the chicken thighs with --i caught some pepper in my nose an almost cried while i had my sneezing fit!!
im hoping its just strained not ripped/torn as that will shorten recovery time....im bummed--we got waves all over the place right now...
  thanx for the( painful) laugh....aloha

trytryagain..your story about helping your wife cooking reminds me of a joke that I heard the other day were a lady was telling a man that she has this very odd medical condition were every time she sneezes she has an orgasm..The man says 'are you taking anything for it' and she says yes...Pepper..  ;D

Before you laugh here's the go on sneezing and laughing..Stand facing a table or bench..Place both hands flat on the bench..stand on one leg and bend your knee...and now you can sneeze without as much pain.

Hope this helps..You'll be ok in a week or so..  :)

ok, just got back from MD--its a pulled oblique.  Rx = rest, ice, advil.  it actually feels a little better today, not sure if thats because it actually IS better or whether im just learning how to move and not move in order to guard against the pain...
i stopped by my favorite break and gazed longingly at the waves.  :'( slowly a tear rolled down my cheek...
nah, oh well, at least its nothing more serious.  im gonna give it a few days and try it out saturday...
thanx for all the well wishes, aloha

DJ...thanx for he laugh....wish you would have given me the advice on how to laugh before the joke though... ;D

I had a similar thing though not as bad.Had to stay off the board for a couple of weeks then learnt to do a lot more paddling on the other side which was good in the long run for my technique.I also started back using a smaller blade paddle for a while.
Hey DJ I got one of those Body Blades the other day and can really feel the benefits even after a week.I reckon 30 seconds on one exerscise is enough to humble anyone at first,I lasted bout 15sec.
Good luck trytryagain,cheers.
