Nose Ride

Yesterday, I went out with the idea that I would see if I could nose ride on my Limmy Lewis 11'er. I have only been out 15-20 times and I am getting comfortable in small waves (waist to maybe shoulder high faces).
So I was riding along with a surfer coming up behind me so I decided to speed ut to give him some room. I took a couple of strokes and stepped farther forward to accelerate (not to nose ride). Like a good surfer, I was not looking forward and not at the board. I did not think about the fact that I was running out of deck pad. My brand new (unopened) bar of Sex Wax was still on the front seat of my car. My foot hit the slick board in front of the mat and I had a great surprise as it went out fom under me. Oops!
Quite a surprise - Other than wax any tips on nose riding?

I put a strip of XM Clear grip from my deck pad to the nose. It's clean, pretty clear and has enough traction to walk to the nose.

Gotta get me some of that. I took a nasty face plant onto the front of my board just weighting the nose yesterday. Actually dented it slightly with my face...... >:(. (no smileys with black eye) My starboard has nothing forward of the central balance point. Can that stuff be cut into strips?

You can also cut it into strips and wrap around your paddles shaft as well for more grip.

gonna get me some of that XM Clear grip, I put some wax on the nose of my board and it was ugly and not any where near as nice as my deck pad.

Wax it guys. You need a pad on the middle because SUP people stand in one place so much that they push the wax away. You won't spend that much time on the nose--just wax it. Of course there is a technique. Go to sticky bumps .com for the boring details, or just do this--wax the board lightly with warm water wax from the pad to the nose stroking the wax the long way. Switch to the wax you need (cold water or whatever) and put a second light coat on from pad to nose stroking the long way. Now put a third coat on stroking from side to side. Done. Go and fall no more grasshopper.

Well, I never got around to ordering the Clear Grip and did get a bar of sex wax for a buck. So I've been using that - I have gotten out to the nose and back w/o slipping and falling. It has been years since I've waxed a board. It is amazing how much you forget. I went out 2-3 times w/o re-waxing and oops!
Hey it's all good! I am loving all this learning and re-learning.

I love this stuff. Works better than wax because once it's applied you don't have to deal with it. In Santa Cruz contact Andy at Ski Shop Santa Cruz, the local Angulo distributor. He should have some.

snappy

I tried it on the tail of my jimmy10 where the pad finished and found that it wasnt grippy enough for my back foot and have now removed it and stuck on a surfboard tailpad, the type thats in peices so I could spread it out leaving 3/8" between the peices to cover the wide area.If the tail pad has a big lip at the back cut if off because it will be a nuisance to drag your body over it when pulling yourself back onto the board.
I'm going to try the clear grip on the nose section as I'm standing up straight when I'm up there as compared to the tail.
I purchased the grip off the off the lip shop site.
Cheers from OZ.

You got it brother, just wax it or something then start running up to the nose. You might even run right off the front, but you're there and you'll get it right next time. Eventually, it'll only feel natural to step up at just the right time. Sticky Bumps have never failed me and...I love the smell of surf wax in the morning. If they ever made surf wax air freshener or little surf wax scented smelly trees for the car, I'd have mine... eau de surf wax without the melted mess on the dashboard.

Nose ride gotta be improved!
Waves were so small this day but not small enough not to go SUPing like today.
Once more i  let the cam "on" in the van and i went for a surf at low tide.
I didn't forget to wax the nose! lot of fun! Much better with sound!

Nice vid and wax or pad on the nose does not matter. Either one will work.

ola sylvano. This is homespot south of Britany, France. The river is called Laïta. You're right, it's beautifull. It has been so for some painters like Gauguin or else (Serusier there):

It's winter there water is about 10°C.
