Thank you Wardog for the sound advice. I finished the install this week over a few evenings. I used 4lb pour foam around the mast track area at least 1" wider than the mast track outline on each side. I routed out a slot for the mast track just a hair too small for it to fit in, and exactly as deep as the mast track. I slathered the mast track in epoxy & microbaloons and then painted slot in the foam with epoxy as well. A tight fit and a lot of epoxy squeezed out, but I'm confident every square inch of that mast track is glued tight to the pour foam. Sanded flush, prepped the deck by sanding with 120 grit, covered with 2 layers of carbon, and then patched the deck pad back on.

When cutting into the board, it looks like its a glass, bamboo veneer, carbon construction on the deck. I was impressed.

Haven't been able to get on the water with it yet, but I'm looking forward to it! The board is ready to go... just need a little bit of wind.

I've got a question for all the expert Zoners who happen to windsurf out there. I'm on track to getting myself back under 200lb and am thinking that I could get some good windSUP usage out of my 9'5" Hammer SUP. I've windSUP'd my Exocet 11'8" and had a great time in little waves, but it's a little heavy and slow to turn around.

What distance from the tail of the board is a good place to set the mast track if modifying the board? I have a couple of windsurf boards to compare placement to, but I'm thinking the track placement may be a bit different on a SUP as compared to a dedicated windsurfer? Is mast box placement based on distance from the fin?

It's such a nice board I don't want to muck it up. I'm confident in my epoxy skills, but I can install the perfect mast track and still have a dog of a windSUP if the placement is off.

I'm also a San Diego windsurfer. Let us know how the SS foil works in really light winds. I've been thinking about getting a foil and would love to hear your review.

Cork! I hadn't even considered that! I've already purchased the carbon, so it's going to be a carbon board, but using cork for the sandwich is worth looking into...

I've considered going the pvc sandwich route, but decided that it wasn't worth the effort for a sup board. Then I considered using 2lb EPS for some better ding and dent prevention, but the weight added up too quickly considering the minimal structural gains. Settled on 1.5lb EPS and Innegra for the durability factor and just because I want to try my hand at Innegra. I also figure the bamboo veneer on the deck will help with strength like a very, very thin sandwich.

Planning on high density foam to surround the mast box and fin box as well as a few extra patches of carbon in those areas to make sure everything can handle the stress of being surf-sailed.

I think that I will go with 2oz innegra, 6oz carbon, and then 4oz fiberglass.

I put a fat ding in my Exocet wind-SUP during a relatively mild crash due to a mast strike, so I am a little pre-occupied with durability with this board build. I think that the Innegra on the bottom will be good insurance for when the broad inevitably gets away from me in the surf or falls off my roof rack

I'm tweaking the final specs of my wind-SUP build and have a question for you all regarding the bottom layup.

My original plan was to do a bamboo veneer over the whole bottom that went something like -

1.5lb EPS core
2oz innegra
6oz carbon
bamboo veneer
4oz fiberglass
glossy finish

However, I'm adding up all the layers and calculating weight and I'm thinking that combined with a similar bamboo veneer layup on the top of the board, this setup would lead to something pretty heavy. I've been considering the following for a light-weight bottom layup -

1.5lb EPS core
2oz innegra
6oz carbon fiber tail patch
6oz carbon fiber
painted and sanded finish

Do you think that this will be a durable layup considering the extra stresses put on a wind-sup? This will really only be used for paddling and light-wind wave sailing, so I'm not planning on jumping the thing like I would a windsurfer.... but I do want the board to be able to survive the occasional tumble through the waves?

Also note that I am planning on vac-bagging everything and doing my cloth wetout on a table to keep weight down.

Wardog and DW - following your posts had a major part in inspiring me to tackle a wind-SUP build on my own. Good to hear from the masters! I'll follow your lead and put in a windsrf-rated longboard finbox in the board for single-fin sailing.

Long time lurker and first time poster! I am in the final stages of planning a wind-SUP build. A 9'6" innegra/carbon board with bamboo veneer reinforcements over 1.5lb stringerless EPS. All vacuum bagged. The overall shape will be something similar to a SupSports Hammer or Starboard Wide Point. The board will have a pretty fast/flat rocker so I can get it planing under wind-power. I want a step down from my Exocet 11'8" wind-SUP so I can do a little more light-wind wave sailing. It will also be used as a regular paddle-powered SUP.

I would like to put a quad-fin setup on the board and have a question about fin size. I have a windsurf-specific set of quad fins. 10cm + 16cm. They use longboard boxes. I also have a set of 13cm fins. Looking around at surf-specific fins, the XL size quad fin sets top out at about 11cm long. My question for you is would my XXL windsurf fins be beneficial for a wind-SUP build? My thought is that my being heavy at 200lb, plus the extra forces from a windsurf sail would necessitate the larger fins. I ask because the winsurf fins need different fin boxes than surf-style quad fins. Does anyone see a benefit to my adding some 8" longboard fin boxes in a quad-fin setup for this board?

I have used Pro-Box fin inserts in my surfboard and kiteboard builds, and have been very happy with the results. If the longboard boxes are not a good idea I will go back to Pro-Boxes and just grab the largest quad-fin set I can find.
