Quote from: SurfnCJ8 on December 31, 2024, 04:26:54 PMHaven't been on here in a while and usually don't comment much, but saw this post so thought I would drop in and say hello. I am curious to hear more about the 9.2 Speed also. I have an 8.10 but struggle on it more than I like so don't ride it that often. I've wondered if the 9.2 might be better for me.  There is a small group of us that Sup surf frequently. We've noticed there aren't as many people out on them here as there used to be. I think a lot have moved to foiling here as well.
I caught the firstnwave I paddled for on my new 9 2 Speed and the ride reminded me of why I loved th 8 10 Speed. It turned out to be exactly what I needed: stability, easy wave catching, turns good, and will ride about any size wave I'm interested in riding. I am really happy that it turned out to be what I envisioned. I think the key to ordering a custom board is to start with the volume you are most comfortable riding.

I was able to take it out twice in fun size surf and it felt great. I caught the first wave I paddled for and had a fun ride. I've ridden several boards other than the Speed, but the Speed always works the best for me. I've got the stoke back.

I haven't seen many SUP posts lately, except from Cookie so I thought I'd post myself. I just recieved a new custom 9'2" Sunova Speedand will take it out tommorow. I loved my 8 10 for about 10 years and my advanced age made it a bit of a chalenge. I rode an 8 10 Placid for a while (grerat board) but missed the Speed, I ordered the 9 2 with a few modifications, width increase to 30 1/2 inches and decreased the volume to 135 lts. I'll let you know how that works for a 77 year old SUPer.

I have a friend that SUPs there a lot and he says he has not had any problems. I dont believe every thing he says but I do know he goes there all the time.

I think that all leash problems are resolved by using a waist leash (noncoiled). You don't trip over it while you move around the board, doesn't pick up seaweed, easy to grab to pull board back to you after you fall and if you fall in big surf you are not dragged as far.

BTW, Sunova can modify any of their boards for you. For example chande the width plus or minus, add or subtract volume.

Sunova could make the Revolution as a quad for you. BTW, why a quad on a longboard?

I'm just as pumped up about SUP surfing now and I've ever been, but at 76 years old, I'm getting a bit more choosey about when I go out. I've found that here in San Diego the attitude towards us has greatly improved. We are pretty much looked on as fellow surfers, not just wantabees that are cheating.

I'm not seeing very many new SUP surfers, but there are definatly several regulars that always showup when the conditions are good. As mentioned, I'm pretty much set up with only two SUPs, one for 90% of the time and one for when I want to surf but its either too small get waves on my 8'10 or too choppy.

Gear Talk / Re: surf SUP volume
March 24, 2024, 08:00:58 AM
I've found that I have a "go to" volume regardless of the shape or dimensions. I'm 5'10" and 180 lbs and my sweet spot is around 130 to 135 liters. I have ridden boards simlar to the size and shape of my current boards with a volume 145 and found them unstable and corky. When I go below 130 ltrs I have problems catching waves because I lose stability and paddle power. Some of my surf buddies also get all their boards in their go to volume.

We ended the year here in San Diego with the largest swell I think I've ever seen here. It arrived on Thursday and is still going strong. I had a fun day on Wednesday and been watching ever since.

I'm planning on trying this as soon as we get some decent surf. I've always preferred thrusters but this makes scene to me

Those dimensions sound like a good lay down long board
