I want to have a play around with paints on my next build, are there any paint experts out there?!
I have had acceptable results spraying heavy bodied acrylic from Hobbycraft, thinned with Pledge, and I picked up some 1K clear coat, I'm going to try and spray this over it to protect it a little.

Has anyone used 2k paints? I'm a little wary of them due to the isocyanates and nasties, as I only have a small workshop with limited ventilation. What is a decent alternative that will look nice and be durable, and not quite so hazardous?

Thanks,

Harry

I buy my car and motorcycle paint and painting supplies from TCP--they have very knowledgeable sales folks. Painting an epoxy board seems about like painting a car. Take a look at TCP's FAQ page. If you have questions, email them. They send you back very complete answers with more detail than you probably want.

There's a great tutorial up at Swaylocks on 2 part urethane. It seems to be the way to go.

Thanks for the reply guys.

That's a great resource Bill, some really good info there. I'm based in the UK, I did speak to a company here yesterday, but they didn't really understand the application, and said that 2k paint was the only way to go.

Thanks Cowboy, I'll check that out!

Also, I think Creek has done some repair that got painted. Who's got the low down on regular rattlecan paint use?

hey,

Ive has some great results with Montana rattle can spray and the MTN version but I never use it on EPS unless spackled and even that can cause worrying times !! I've also used both over the epoxied final coat using stencils and fades and then covered that with rattle can clear coat varnish from a can which works well. Im now using Solarez clear as well and that yields a really tough final shell .....colours really pop and its tough as nails after....more than 8 ways to skin a cat (no cats were harmed in the making of any of these boards I should say !).

If u want pics PM me...i've written this twice and my attachments are too big it would seem so...

I rattled can sprayed the bottom and the rails of the board in my avatar image. It turned out looking pretty good. I used white Rustoleum epoxy. (I don't know where they get off calling it "epoxy" though because it smells and behaves like oil paint.)

The key with rattle can spraying is to shake the can for a few minutes > submerge in very warm water (not hot) for five minutes > then shake for a minute and you're ready for the races. You'll get a finer finish with minimum orange peel and never run out of air before the paint is gone.
