Ever pull a muscle in your side?
« on: December 14, 2013, 04:10:31 PM »
I was out SUP surfing this morning, was starting to lose my balance and recovered but pulled a muscle in my side just under my rib cage.  Hurts like @#$%.  I'm trying to stretch it out but cant find a position to stretch that particular muscle.  Anyone have any ideas?

Hi
Sorry to hear about your pulled muscle, since this almost always means time out of the water....unless one goes out, even in pain, and comes back worse.
Pulled muscles don't always respond well to stretching just after the injury has ocurred, because one is recreating the injurious mechanism.
Good old rest and recovery works wonders for the first few days. A light abdominal brace that keeps the area compressed slightly during daily activities and a massage by a sports therapist might round it off, if the injury is mild. Listen to your body, which positions aggravate/alleviate it, if breathing deeply increases the pain and during which phase of breathing.
More severe injury would benefit from clinical expertise.
Finally, work back to paddling fitness by considering both strength and mobility exercises for your midsection.
Keep us posted and good luck !

I was thinking more along the lines of SUSing tomorrow morning and hoping for the best!  :o Taking it easy and getting out real quick if it seems to be getting worse.  I feel much better today, so I plan to try and just be really careful.  My favorite spot is predicted to only have 2ft waves tomorrow, so I think I can take it pretty easy.

If paddling causes a slight discomfort just go easy. If it causes pain you need to continue to rest.
