Hey All,

What kind of times are people hitting on the avg per mile.  I know wind, tide and flow have a significant impact but just on your avg paddles what times are you hitting?  I'm doing 14.1 on the avg for 11 miles plus.  My first race is Oct 18th and I'm still working on pacing.  Then Hawaii in Feb or March.  Then in July for MK 2009.

Thanks in advance

PonoBill

On flatwater (river) I'm doing 4.5 miles in 55 minutes typically. My best time was 51.5 but I had a helpful current for half of that.

At the Battle of the Paddle I did 4.5 miles in 1:20 (yuck) but conditions sucked.

Good times.  My miles are 14.5ish over 10-15 miles...or pretty close to 4mph.  I have only been doing SUP for a few months but I have OC-1 background so most the muscle and endurance were pretty much there.   I have never really put the pedal to the metal because I usually go at least 10 miles as I am training to cross the channel from catalina island and I need to get up to 20 miles on my long training days but I dont think I can go too much faster....on this board

I am getting a new board that is more suitable for my weight and I have big hopes hitting my goal which is a 5mph cruzing speed for 20 miles assuming mild conditions.  If I can hit the 5mph curzing I can sprint knock off most of the ocean kayaks and the slower OC-1s which would be fun as everyone think the SUP is the slowest thing out there.

As soon as I get my distance goals met, I want to work on getting faster.

I've done 2 races up here this year.  One was 7.6 miles in 1:31 & the other was 5.5 miles in exactly one hour (5.5 mph)
The first race was on a 14' Vortice & the 2nd was on a 16' Bark.  Both races were dead flat water, one had a head wind one direction and a tailwind home.  Both races left me totally drained with nothing left in the tank.  Good luck with your training!

Greatdane...Joe Bark just finished my board...all 17.8 feet of it.  He says I will hit that 5mph easy.

I noted your other posts and that is really some outstanding speed.

How long have you been SUPing?

Shawn, thanks for the "outstanding" comment.  I need to get/borrow a GPS unit, to really see how fast I'm going.  I am going on faith that these races have been going on for so many years that the distances are accurate.  I started SUP'n June of '07.  I did a fair amount of OC2 paddling with a guy who taught me tons about paddling. Besides that I'm just a bike racer and runner, and I am fortunate enough to get paid to lift weights at work.

With your OC background, I have no doubt you will hit 5-6mph with your new Bark.  Please post pictures when you get it.

I am doing another 5 mile race on the 25th, we'll see how that goes....

cardio, low body fat and (I figure) good strength to bodyweight and technique from the OC seems like you are really well trained to win at SUP.

I talked with Jimmy Terrell and he assured me that running and biking were a big part of paddle sport...I have not been doing enough of that.

My board is going to be ready next week, I will let yall know how it goes.

I'm looking forward to trying a big race board myself. I've hit 10:20 for short periods with my 12'2" but I'm certain at least a knot of that is current. I'd like to break ten minutes a mile. Even better, I'd like to be able to hold that for at least the initial part of a race.

Breaking a 10 min mile is a sort of standard for outrigger OC-1.  A lap around naples island is 2.5 miles and if you can break 25 minutes on an OC-1 you are doing really well.  I dont think anyone initially thought SUP could ever be that fast but clearly the designs are evolving FAST.  OC-1 are mostly 21'6 with a 14-15 inch beam.  To some degree that 21'6 evolved from the business problem of standard shipping containers out of hawaii maxing at 22 so with packaging 21'6 was in part because of that.

I feel a kind of loyalty to the shorter boards and I dont want to be standing up in something that looks like an OC-1.  I told joe it would have to be under 18 and still look like a board or I was not interested

Shawn, that's funny about the shipping containers.  Two years ago my friend got enough guys together to have an entire container of Huki OC1's shipped to Seattle.  Everybody got great deals since it was an entire container full.  Just wish I had been one of those guys. I don't know where he got his OC2, it's freakin' long!  We call it the Queen Mary.

Huki is one of the few guys who has oc-1s that exceed 21'6 but most of them stay on the west coast so it works out.

I really want a kai waa Scorpius but there is a 2 year wait!!! It is hard to find a good fit for my body weight.  No problem with SUP, I can get whatever I want made for under 3 grand, and truth be told, I like SUP better 80% of the time.  I only miss my OC when it is really rough or I am going into a really strong headwind, or I see a fin...or some ass is passing me on a kayak

Shawn Michael, how wide is your new Bark?  How is the stability?  I have been talking to him as well.  Seems like the way to go for California water.

Shawn Michael

Just over 28inches.  Originally I had planned for 27, but joe said the extra inch would add a lot of stability while having only the slightest effect on speed.  The crossing from catalina and my usual routes have a lot of side swell so I went along with it.

We've got some nice channel crossing weather.  Post up some pics of that new Bark.
