Me on my HOT sail from the old days.

Sail type...brand...style...durability...all depends what kind of sailing you're focused on...board style...conditions...etc...

The Super Freaks are very luffable...so, they work great in down the line conditions where you want the sail to go neutral, allowing you to just surf the wave...for BAF sailing, maybe not the best...
Jalama breaks masts...a broken mast in the shorepound destroys sails...the Super Freak mast sleeve is the best on the market...like a braided fire hose material...so, durability trumps all...

The soft sails also work great for sailing SUP's...again, luffability is better than a draft locked profile for this style of sailing...

Hah!  We had Grid Locks one year and Spider Locks after that.  I used to love those things.

Reading this thread, I realize how little I know about current sailing equipment! My sailing gear is clearly ancient by modern standards and is dedicated windsurf equipment, not sup.

The cool thing is that that old gear (early 2000's Northwaves and pre-historic custom 7'8" glass board for bigger days, lightweight 8'4" wave board for lighter conditions) still works incredibly well for the conditions I typically sail in here in the Gorge.
Guess I'm going to have to get educated about this newer gear - I'm intrigued by the idea of soft, luffable sails and the modern board shapes described - even though there is no more room in the garage, marriage or the budget to make any big changes. Unless I demo something and get hooked. ;D

I've got a spider lock 5.0 in the garage. I'm sure it would blow out the first time its used.

I'm getting kind of amped up too. I think it's because the surfing has sucked lately and the wind is coming up early and lasting all day. No idea what that's all about, last year the days were like clockwork--dead calm in the morning, starting to get windy at 10, blown out at noon. Lunch, then a downwinder.

Who is in charge here. I didn't order this.

Anyway, I took the old Realwind 270 and a Naish down out of the rafters. I'm staring at them. I guess I gotta go give this a go. It's embarrassing though not to be able to hit a jibe. Whatever skills I had are long gone, except for waterstarts. I'm still a waterstarting S.O.B.

It was fun, but I wouldn't trade any of it for todays modern gear. The new boards rip jibes so fast and easy, you don't even need to do lay down jibes to pull one off. If fact, you need to be lightning quick to even lay the sail over a little bit before you're smoking away in the opposite direction.

Mantra:  Waterstarts are good for the core.

Light wind Event Site skateboard sailing.  Your jibes will be back in an hour.

Lets go.

I've got one, must be in my warehouse someplace. Also a dunesailer. Both are really good ways to spend some time healing.

Yikes, pavement without a helmet. I guess the young don't remember Craig S. (Ken Winner's shaper) being killed doing that.
