Here's my first effort downwinding on the Starboard New. The board wasn't designed for this but does surprisingly well.

Thanks for the video Paul. Great to see you're able to use your NEW on downwinders.

I've heard that it can be great for downwinders if you have the balance for it.

I'm planning to order the 23.5" version of the NEW tomorrow but I think using it for downwinders would be a bit optimistic for me. I'll give it a try but I think I'll be using it more for flatwater paddling.

By the way, I think your flatwater speed on the NEW will improve as you get used to the board. I know someone that got the NEW in the spring and it took him a few months of frequent paddling on it before he could take full advantage of the board.

Do you know how thick the tail and nose of the board are? I'm looking for a board bag but it may be tricky due to the unusually narrow but thick shape.

I think it's something like 18" thick/deep..  ;D

I know Paul is in London or France right now on a trip and should be home in about a week so I'm sure he'll measure it for you then.

Yes from memory the tail does really thicken up even though it becomes a point. I think the nose is about 10" but the tail would be at maybe 15" or more.

I think the perfect quiver for someone who likes to race but also likes to downwind would be the board you are buying along with a 14' Surf Race. Are you getting the carbon or glass construction?

Argosi

15" thick at the tail!!! And I thought DJ was trying to be funny  ;D

My board should be here in a week. I got the 23.5" blue stripe version as the carbon is over priced in my opinion. I had someone at the store weigh both versions a while ago and they told me the carbon was 29 lbs while the epoxy was 30 lbs for the 25" wide board. With the carbon also being more fragile, I'm not sure why anyone would get the carbon one. 29lbs sounds heavy for a carbon board though. I'm wondering if the reading was done accurately. The irregular shape of the NEW would result in more surface area than a typical board of that length so that makes it harder to produce a light board.

I'd love to get a 14' Surf Race as my next board but I currently don't have the storage for it. I'm using a Starboard 12'6" SUPer (same shape as Cruiser) and a 12'6" windsurfing race board as my downwind boards now. The SUPer is a lot of fun since it surfs well (at least as close to surfing as I can get) and it's really stable. It's not as fast as my 26.4" wide windsurf board though.

Actually it's only about 10" at the tail. I'll try to post some pics shortly.
