cadence using ipod

I have tried counting cadence and it is always disruptive to look at my watch.  I tried something new using mixmeister (freeware).  I basically used it to find a bunch of 120 bpm songs and created a playlist on my ipod.  If I can roughly keep rhythm, then I should be close to 60 strokes/ min.  Turns out, Pet Shop Boys like to use 120 bpm.

Given my sense of rhythm, my error is probably +/- 5 strokes/min but at least I can paddle longer stretches uninterrupted.  Also works as a timer if you want to do interval workouts, e.g. 3 songs per set.

If you want accuracy try a Gymboss timer. You can you it for all types of training.

Very cool. I've got Mixmeister and used it for a similar purpose, but it was for doing workouts to music. I haven't thought of using it for paddle cadence. Thanks.

Of course you could just count "1, one thousand, 2, one thousand, 3 one thousand, " until the pace became second nature.  Not as much fun as the iPod app, but far easier to change up the cadence mid-run without having to fiddle with the iPod.

I always take my iPhone with me anyway--the music is great for downwinders and distance paddling, and I use it as a GPS and emergency phone. All I have to do is choose music with the right BPM for the cadence I want, it's hard to imagine anything simpler.

I always have my nano.  Plus, 1 one thousand, 2 one thousand doesn't work for a cadence of 55/min.

...yeah but how many pet shop boys songs can you put into a mix before you want to paddle back home! ;D

Corinne Bailey Rae on the way out, Pet Shop Boys on the way back--increases performance in both ways--cadence and motivation.
