Are You Compressing Enough?

Another case of bad compression. If my friend would have compressed he would be in a position to come back to uncompress to hit the small lip. He is also in training.

For his age boltupright compresses pretty nice. A little more and he would be right there but heck he is getting old....lol

Byronmaui

Not as compressed as boltupright but he is following this thread cause spoke to him on the phone about compression. Sorry for the hiding of the face... ;D ;D

I was thinking about this thread today and focused my efforts on trying to compress. What a difference....first I fell a lot....then I made a few hard turns that just felt so right. The waves today were chest high and glassy...perfect for me to practice on. I just kept focusing on bottom turns...getting low and pushing off as I entered the turn....big improvement....thanks.

Byron, this is the best advice i've had in a long time. tried it the other day and it was like opening the door to another dimension. thanks a lot !

Here is the perfect example of too much on the tail and not enough compression. One of the many non released videos we have. Sorry for the shakiness but you can see many sections missed because of stance and bending at the waist. This was done in November 2008 prior to Blane's advice. ****One thing funny about this tip is it was freely given and offered prior to my son's affiliation with PSH. Best advice yet....

Another thing about compression that I was thinking about is that the guys who surf shortboards as well as big boards have to know about compression.  Without pumping your shortboard, you will not go anywhere on the wave.  With big boards, you can rely on the glide of the board to get you going and keep you going on the wave.  Maybe it is good for SUP riders to ride shortboards as well so they practice their compression and vertical surfing.

Here is Travis after a month of focusing on compression. He still needs to compress a little more and sometimes he falls back on his old ways of bending too much at the waist. By end of summer compression will be second nature. Good luck with everyone trying this tip.

QuoteGood way to practice on any day is take off with the intent to practice the trim position.   After the bottom turn scoot forward and compress the whole body and set his trim.

thank you, thats one of the most interesting things i've read on any forum. i surf really upright with feet close together, i'm going to go out and address that with this advice.

and that shot of fanning, WOW!

Dw I agree the look is better but the only problem is the end result no speed/drive heading back . I am finding at my age I had to go back and adress my compression even though I surfed all my life. I think my problem was starting in a standing position I fogot the basic. Just my nickel worth.
