Do you dry off your board before you put in in your board bag?

For reference, I never use a board bag and pretty much never rinse the board--only if I get a bunch of sand on it or I'm washing off accumulated salt.  I do plenty of damage to my boards in the water, so concerns during transport and storage are almost negligible.

For traveling to and from the surf spot (usually 5 min minimum to 35 mins max), it gets slid into the van onto a movers blanket which has been rolled up lengthwise between the middle seats, OR is slid into overhead straps where it hangs inside the van above the heads of the passengers.  (Got that idea from SanoSup and StandinDan--thanks guys).

I hang my boards overhead in the garage at home, only transport my boards locally, so have never seen a reason for a bag, but would certainly see potential for mold if one stuffed a wet board into a bag.

I don't use a bag either.
Just slide th board down the middle of my van on 2' wide carpet that is rolled up on the sides.
I usually just leave the board in the middle of the van.

Do you have any pics or suggestions on the overhead straps to hang a board inside
the van above the heads of the passengers???
I think I'd like to try that in my Odyssey, if it makes sense.
Thanks.

Interesting coincidence you have an Odyssey....That's what I've got and that's also what StandinDan and SanoSup use for their surf vehicles.  I'm too techtarded to fight with Photobucket today, but I think SanoSup posted a picture of the back of his van in a different thread, which probably shows the straps.

To put it in text, I basically used seatbelt straps that I cut out from my far back folding seat and tied them off on the grab handles that are on both the driver and passenger sides of the car; these handle are at the back of the car (for the rear seat) and there are two more for the middle seat passengers.  So when you tie the straps off, it creates a board "hammock" on the inside roofline of the car.  The allows you to put two more boards on their edges up the middle on the floor; I even removed the middle seat inside armrests to give more sliding room.  To make it even more extreme, I removed the front passenger seat entirely, so if I choose to pop out a center seat the vehicle could conceivably carry at least 6 SUP's, safely inside, sans any racking headaches.

And of course, no bags....

If I can find SanoSup's picture, I'll put in a link....

I just pull mine out of the bags when I get home and then lay the bags out on the floor but propped open.. like a big tube.. open.. Then I put a small fan at the end and let her run all night.. Fold them up the next day... Do not want them to get moldy like everything else here in the PNW.

I realize this still may look like board porn.. or bag porn..

I have a Sienna van. The tray between the front seats folds down which allows me to slide my SUP between the front seats, vertically, on its side. I use a strap to suspend and secure the tail so it does not whip around in the back (I have all the rear seats removed). My SUP is 9-7, which just fits. There is room behind the passenger seats for 2 more windsurfing boards (which are less than 8'), 3 sails, 2 masts, and a boom. Oh yeah, my wife and the dog fit also. :)

Thanks guys,

My sup is 10'6".  My Odyssey has a front tray that I fold down, and I don't have anything between
the two second seats...they are separated.  The 10'6" just fits down the middle if the pin tail
is propped up a bit to fit into the cavity of the rear door  (I think a square tail wouldn't fit - maybe
if really propped up).

Kernal, I was just looking at it and now think my 10'6" is too long to suspend on the ceiling
(the slope of the rear door lets it work on the floor).
What is the largest board you hang up there?  It seems like your 10' 2" would be too long.
Actually, I guess a better question is what is the longest board you think you could hang up there?

Good questions.....Yes....the 10'6" is about the largest I can fit in the car, straight up the middle.  I can hang my 9'2" in the overhead "hammock" straps, but that's about max length that will fit overheard without banging into the rear view mirror excessively.

Never again!!!

I used to use a board bag all the time.  I always rinse the boards off after use, along with the leashes.  The last thing I need is for a leash to break because the stainless in the leash or the leash plug corroded.  But it just became a hassle dealing with a big bag every time.  The bag would flutter on top of the suburban, unless you positioned the board just right.  The when I got home aI would rinse the board, then dry it all out and back in the back to be stored in the garage.  It just became a pain.  So now I use bags for distant traveling, long road trips and air flights only.

We just bought a new Silverado, and instead of buying aluminum racks right away, I bought a tailgate pad.  I got three sup's and a shortboard stacked on it, with no problem.  Of course they are all short sup's.  Once the race season starts, I will have to buy a rack, that can allow the board to go over the roof.  It is so nice to not have to lift the boards up over my head.

As far as dings go, i use jegs racer tape on the rails, which is much tougher than any other rail tape out there, except for Railsaver Pro.  But the Jegs tape is $29 for enough to do two boards.  With the tape on the rails, I can set the board down on the rail and not worry about dings/scratches.

The van is the best way to go.  We rented a Kia van over in Maui, last month and it had captains chairs and a removable center console tray.  My Kings board and my wifes pocket rocket fit in between the seats, with my shortboard in the back.  So nice to just slide the boards in and out. If we lived closer to surf, a van would be a must.

used to rack em without bag. now put down rear seat and fully recline frt, and keep in car. slide out of bag for use, back in bag when done.
rarely hurt my boards surfing. always hurt them moving around garage in/out of vehicles etc. bag protects. rarely rinse, tho when i do i take fins off and scrub with dishsoap etc.

travelling soon to nica and was scheming to build additional protection with pipe insulation etc to supplement protection of bag. jus realized the solution is 2 bags. i will travel with my 8'11" AW in its 9-0 bag--plan to insert the bagged AW into the bag for my stary 9'6"--

two bagger!

btw i put that new aussie railtape everyone rec'ed on the new AW--the shit is the shit--totally superior product to the naish tape i have been using. go figure i cant remember the name.......

Very true....I just decided it's a risk I'm willing to take for the convenience when driving 15 minutes to the break....

If you use a bag that is plastic inside, you need to do a quick dry (i.e., wipe with towel) before putting it in the bag.  If you miss a few drops, no big deal.  Just leave the bag unzipped to let air in after you get home.

I rinse and bag religiously after every session--and then dry with a Shamwow (an essential must-have for the surf kit).  Never had a problem.  I'll usually open up the zipper a bit on the bag.  I'm in the "most dings happen outside the water" camp--at least that's been my experience.

My main reason for bagging is the sun as my boards spend a lot of time on the roof of my car.  Couple months ago I was down at Wardog's when a customer came in with a board that had baked in the sun from too many days on the roof of the car.  The color change was remarkable enough--but that didn't compare to the spectacular failure he recounted in the water--straight-across snap in rough conditions from where the carbon had weakened.

Nope. Mold, pine needles, ice, sand all part of the fun. Usually way to COLD to even think about wiping them off. Winter paddling creates ICE all over the deck. Sometimes I remove the 12'6" from the bag after I get back to my moldy garage - sometimes not. My garage does NOT look like PB's OBTW!
