Wide boards rule! I'm mind-eye-balling a new Infinity at 7'6x32" for conditions we are talking about.
Taller than most, shorter than others.

Ah, the slop. My conditions are like supuk's also. And Charlie is right, lower volume is better. Call me a masochist, or a fool, but I take the chop as a personal challenge to improve. Recently after enjoying clean, point break surf for a few weeks, I came home to 15-20 mph winds and god awful chop. What the hell, it's still surf. Bend your knees, paddle always in the water, and enjoy!

Not sure if anyone mentioned this, but at some breaks at high tide,
the backwash can make it realllllyy bumpy.  Not ideal conditions
for Standing Up on a SUP...but a really good balance workout!

Yeah, backwash throws me sometimes.  I think because I am looking out to see and adjusting for all the bumps there, but not expecting a bump to come from the beach.

That frequently describes Privates Santa Cruz when there is any kind of swell and high tide, an unpredictable washing machine ride to test the balance. If the swells and reflections are longer period, it can be fun.

Supping is not fun in chop or wind . Time to get out the
sail and plug it in or go Windsurfing.

I was whining about it when I started this thread, but I have been going out in our windy conditions almost every day, and I have definitely improved my chop technique and balance.  I've gotten to where I don't mind choppy conditions nearly as much as I used to.  Of course, glassy and clean is more fun, but I have been having fun in the chop too.

just thought i'd throw in my 2 cents.  in wind and/or heaving seas, ride a heavier board, if not a longer board.  i've got a 9-6 beast that weighs a little over 30 lbs and in sour conditions, it's like riding on a bumpy road in a cadillac.  in fact, i've decided that i like heavier in almost all conditions, so much so that i've been trying to think of ways to add weight to my lighter SUPs.  another layer of glass?  sure, why not!

Seriously thinking about that for my next toy.  Was a rapid windsurfer in years past, all my old gear is long gone, but thinking about getting a sail rig for my AW 8'10."  Expecting that I probably remember how...I hope.

I'll have to try that.  I've got a 10'3" beast.  It's just a pain to get it over to the beach.

that's the single issue i have with the board -- walking to the water is a big pain and walking back after a long session is even worse.  still, the benefits are worth it, imo.
