Need for speed

I have been Sussin a reef  break with a bunch of proners lately. They are all long-boarders. There is a fast little section that forms off the peak. The proners all set a rail and blast right through the little bowl section. Some can crank a bottom turn and then set a rail and go. Me, no matter what I do I cannot get enough speed to punch through. No way can I do a bottom turn and then get enough speed. Quick little top turn and set a rail, still cannot make it. Frustrating. I am sure all the proners are sniggering about this.

So, either my technique is lacking - entirely possible since I am only 3-4 months into Sussin, or my board is too fat and slow. It is a 32" WidePoint. Or maybe I am too fat and slow.

Anyway, any suggestions?

3 or 4 months susing is just a beginning for more advanced skill sets.

I don't know your surfing experience but if a long boarder can make it you should be able to also.

The 3 approaches include

making a section going under the white water which with the help of your paddle you should be able to get around
    small sections.

riding the face and finding speed by climbing and dropping

going over the top and going as far as you can before dropping back down with the section.

If the section is to long to use first or second technique then I make the longer sections going over the top gaining
speed on re entry to get around them. Some waves are closeouts you will never make but ending with a good rolly
coaster or air is making the most of it.

The other issue I believe is board width. My 29 inch wide 8'5 is great at making sections. My new 8'2 at 31'" wide
is not as good. I am still learning the board but I think the additional width effects its down the line speed and drive. My friend likes his wide point and he surfs it well.

If your total experience is only 3 or 4 months then you need more time. Keep it up, watch the videos and push yourself.

Thanks, tube rider.

I windsurfl a lot and you get used to all that power you have in the sail. I just need to learn how to get the power I need from the wave. I think you're right - time on the water is probably the cure here.
