My barber has been asking about SUP for a couple of months.  He is an avid fisherman and stands up and fishes in his small boat on open ocean all the time.  I thought this would make his transition to SUP would be easy.  Anyone here confirm my theory?

Not sure if standing in a boat is = to standing on SUP but they sell sup's specifically for fishing.  Check out Starboard Fisherman and Boteboard and Boardfisher.  Also look in the forum for more info under Fish Tales.

IMO most people can "do" SUP with the the right width and board for their purposes.  Most fishing boards are wider anyhow for stability and putting stuff on the board so it is "easier" to balance.

I use my SUPs for fishing all the time and love it, way more than fishing from a kayak.  But I do this on rivers and lakes, I think for the ocean you'll need a super stable board so you can focus on fishing and not so much on staying upright.  Being higher up, along with using polarized sunglasses, I get a really great view and often see the fish I'm about to catch.

Look at the Hooked SUP. I am a pretty big and have another big board. It gets me by and I have done some mods for fishing to it. Good board and I like it but:
I got the Hooked this summer and it is an amazing board and for fishing it would be hard to beat. I would put it up against any other board in it's class. I am very happy and impressed with it. I will be posting some video and photos when I get around to editing them as right now I am just learning to do that and it is a jumble. If you are serious about a board for being out on the water all day and to fish on this is the one.

I stand up fish from my South County Turtle works great in both freshwater and saltwater. (yesterday got some nice Striped bass here on Lakes Bay Atlantic City nJ)

Of course I would recommend the South County Turtle but I also use the
Pau Hana Big Easy and I'm a BIG guy (6'2 280# particularly after those fillets last night)

Let me know if I can be of any further help
