Help for a 9'2 template design
« on: March 02, 2008, 12:03:32 PM »
Aloha,
I don't know very much on design. i would like a radical board with an efficient nose rocker.  I'm looking for opinion about this design:

i'm 147lb. I surf often quite small waves like on this video: "into the small"

My board often "nose dives" after a top turn off the lip, that's why i'm looking for a big nose rocker. Something like BC does on this PSH board or may be more:

I'd make it a little bit wider than 26.6", increase the nose rocker by no more than .5", pull your wide point back and make the tail wider.

but thats just me

why does it nose dive? If the nose is already pulled in, adding nose rocker might not be the answer. If its a fuller nosed board, it could just be hanging up, a problem with more vertical surfing on a fuller template.

There's a very few people who can answer with precision about template. Alan, you're one of them, so I wanna say big MAHALO .
It's easy to draw template (before order the foam) on this site: http://www.atuacores.com/surmesure.php
Here is below the template of the board i actually ride. I notice the nose rocker is already quite big.:

That may be where some of your problems are coming from.

The tail rocker IMHO is pretty flat. Great for a fluid, down the line cruising, but not for a more vertical approach. For that template, another 3/4" of tail would help the board out a lot. Also, try to "stage" the rocker. Look at your current board's bottom and you'll notice it has a continuous (and pretty flat) bottom for most of the board (excluding the nose). Try to leave that through the middle, but make the tail relatively pronounced. That will help it surf off the back foot and snap more. How much of that you want is up to you.

I've tried this bee-board today in choppy condition. It's soo different than the 9'11!
PRO:  light, responsive, bottom turns are real turns, top turns bring a good and right feeling. I've had one or two nose ride, I felt also how it can spin easily.

It's much better than my big and heavy 9'11!
CONTRA: the board is not very fast. The big tail rocker brings you to the middle to get some speed. This board have to be ridden close to the curl.

Alan Cheateau brought a good idea with this big tail rocker. The board seems to be secure while a manoeuvre. I've got to improve the noseride now. Juanito did a good shape, Jojo a good epoxy and Steph a good paint. Thanks everybody, i'm stoke! I hope I will get the kind of feeling that Leleo Kinimaka can get on his board!

Glad this thing worked out for you. Next board, if nose riding is important to you, try to thin out the tail. With a pronounced tail rocker, that should help it "lock in" to the curl.

It looks good!

I've been riding this board for 6 month now and i'm happy with it.
I have a lack of speed with the big kick tail rocker but  the board surf really better with two big twins i've built.
After that, I've had a lot of research about fins placement. For a long time i tried to surf with fins as much forward as possible because i have a powerfull paddle stroke. That makes slash or cut back, hitting the foam easier but that's not the real "radical surfing". Last contest I entered, i've been the looser versus this longboard champion (Gwen) who had fins really at the back. So i've changed my fin placement toward to the back. Now, my surf is a bit more vertical, hanging five or even ten becomes easier.

Now my next board won't be a nose rider, I don't want any compromise, I want a radical board, here's my 8' project:

It's gonna be shorter but with more volume at the tail, it will be more stable.
