Cost to ship a board from Maui to the east coast?
« on: March 01, 2011, 01:06:19 PM »
Say -- does anyone have any idea how much it might cost to ship a board from Maui to the great northeast, Rhode Island, specifically?  And what carrier and/or method might be the best (at the least expensive price)?  I'm thinking of getting a custom board from a HI-based shaper.  The price of the board is right but I'm afraid that the $$$hipping might turn it all wrong.
thoughts?

Would like to know myself.  I know it is $150 - $200 or so just from Ca to east coast depending on size and weight.  How much is it from Hawaii to Ca?

Hey Linter, I'm on eastern long island N.Y. and I have had several boards shipped from Maui . The cost has fluctuated over the years . I think It ranged from $245 - $385. These prices were to JFK airport and I intercepted the package after a thorough inspection I did my self . I have also used a ground transport from airport to house. The most reliable being - New England Motor Coach Transport. Using this method usually added  another $75-$125 . The plus side is it comes right to your door. The minus is it's just one more hand in the mix and another opportunity for damage! Make sure you do a full inspection on your board whether at the airport or on the delivery truck before you sign and accept for your new toy. Don't take no for an answer ! Some times the freight people can be in a hurry. If you need anymore info you can send a pm . Later, FMS

Linter - any east coasters building customs SUP's yet?  How bout florida?  I'm sure someone could bring it up for you for a couple bucks. Especially since most of NY's population will be returning in a month or so ;D

How about getting some east coast shaper to make you the board?  Mike Becker in Sayville, Long Island makes some sweet custom SUPs.  Check him out at naturesshapes.com

The 9'8" I've got in the shop is lighter than a similar sized longboard.  No stringer.  His personal board is stringerless, with carbon tape along the rails.  He flipped it upside down on the sidewalk in front of my shop, so just the nose and tail were touching the ground and bounced up and down in the middle.  I cringed, but the board was fine.  Amazing stuff.  Definitely worth checking out if you are going custom and live in the Northeast.

You can see a couple of his boards in the inventory page of my site.
Good luck!

Linter , yeah shipping is expensive. Will  the shaper offer any prices ? Try getting a local shapper to build one. Like as mentioned before Becker, or maybe  Shawn Vecchione in Mass. Vecsurfboards.com.

Also Bunger in Long Island - not sure if they are shaping SUP yet though......  Check out Montauk and Eastern LI, someone has to be doing some nice custom work out there....you could paddle it back home!!

Thanks, all, for the suggestions.  If the cost of shipping is $250 or less, I might just go with my Maui guy.  He's got tons of experience shaping SUPs and is especially good, I think, at what I'm looking for.  Will keep you posted ....

Erik,
Last year I used Pilot Freight to ship a 10' longboard from the Bay Area (SFO) to Logan Airport in Boston.  Total cost was $69 which included the insurance.  The key was to go terminal to terminal.  This means I boxed the board and delivered it to their shipping terminal, and a friend picked it up at their terminal in Boston.  I used a box from a SUP, and put some other stuff in there (fishing gear, etc.) as well.  An outfit like this may be the cheapest way to go.

When we ordered our boards from Maui, all three were shipped together and we did the terminal to terminal pick up as well.  The receiving terminal was an outfit called Clock Freight, but I don't know if they were actually the shipper.  If I can figure out what the break out for shipping was per board, I'll post it for you.
