Rapidfire and roofrack damage?
« on: August 15, 2010, 07:53:25 AM »
Loving the new rapidfire. So much fun. Anyone else having issues with their roofrack? I almost lost my board off the top of my truck. I have a standard yakima with the channels. Heavy wide board appears to be too much for a standard roof rack. Just a warning if you are getting the new rapidfire and plan on putting it on top of your car/truck.

I ahve regular Yakima racks and just strap it down with kayak style webbing straps and cam buckle.

Had them layered 4 high on the highway at 120km/hr

No problems from my end either.  I strapped my rapidfire to a yakima rack on Qtowers and drove from SLC to Denver...

I have one and attach it to the top of my Laird 12-1 (Softtop side up) on a standard Yakima rack, no problems. i find the handles lock into the far rail of the Laird.

How heavy a board is it?

I carry two 44 lb LPCs on my Thule square bar rack without a problem.

When I installed my rack on my truck, the first 100 miles or so I ran a strap around both the boards, securing it all down on the roof.... just tied them loosely. The idea was that the rack do all the support, but if it ever cut loose, the strap would keep it all from going anywhere.
After a week or so, I was more confident that the rack was sturdy. It has like 3000 miles on it now.

I don't get this question... a Rapidfire is not substantially different than any other whitewater kayak (creekboats and river runners) on the market today. Same weight too (for creekboats anyway). People travel with multiple kayaks on their roofracks all day long. Although almost all of them invest in a decent aftermarket system (Thule, Yakima, etc.)

My personal record is ten kayaks on one roof rack at freeway speeds. This was after having to walk off a river halfway down on account of darkness and too many portages around logjams. Sure, we got funny looks from other motorists, but mostly on account the ten people crammed clown-style into one subaru wagon. :)
