In Surfing - any preference of coiled vs straight leashes?
« on: October 08, 2010, 10:37:34 AM »
And is there any issue of a coiled leash bouncing the board back at you?

i remember a thread some months ago of a coiled leash slicing through a board, but probably rare?

thanks

Coiled leashes are AWFUL in the surf... think of how your phone cord gets trashed... then apply it to a massive leash.

Just my two cents... but I have done a TON of leash testing.

Probably less rare than you might think because most coiled leashes explicitly say NOT FOR SURFING on the package.

I think you're not taking it far enough. Coiled leashed are beyond horrible for surfing.

coil=flat water
straight=surf
nothing=swimming
coil + surf = Hospital/graveyard
straight + surf/distance = happiness and puppies and  butterflies
nothing + surf/distance = workout in surf plus extreme adrenalin rush and jesus impersonation if Mr. Nibbles is in the area-distance-little creepy for a second going after your board especially in/near kelp beds!

I don't know what all the fuss is about.. I use my coiled leash all the time in the surf without any problems at all.. and I'll continue to.

But I'm only talking small waves without much falling.. Once the waves get bigger and the falls are happening more often I swap to a straight leash.

I agree with DJ, I like the coiled leash when just paddling around and on smalll waves.  I do not have to worry about the cord being in my way.

Coiled=headach and if snaped a head or body injury. Broke my coil and it marked up my board....bad. The body not as tuff as a board kinda soft. I like just a normal leash...just my thoughts.

Personally not a big fan of the coiled leash for surfing.  I had them on a few of my boards in the beginning and the coil will snag itself - all of the sudden i'm yanking my foot trying to get the coil to unhook itself because the coil has locked onto another part of the coil!!!  This was a nightmare because I was in sizable surf and I missed waves because my foot was trying to escape a stockade like full nelson from the leash.  Never again...never again....haha.

I use only a straight leash for the surf.

I had the same experience as you Linus. Damn coil leash would tangle up like a slinky! Arrhh >:(  Maybe a part coil like the Balin leash would do , but as was said on another thread, they aren't available here.

I just paddled with a coiled leash for the first time, was in surf,west coast, picked up weeds and got frustratingly tangled at times. Flatwater it stayed neatly on deck, no drag.

I can't think of a good reason to use them in the surf--leash drag isn't a big deal surfing. Fine for flatwater--use them there all the time. I like the hybrid design but still don't see enough benefit in surf.

In big surf, especially offshore out by myself I want the thickest leash I can get, with ginormous fittings, doubled up attachment strings, and lots of velcro. Preferably folded and wrapped ends instead of glued. But thats just me. No coils.
