Am I asking for trouble?
« on: August 18, 2011, 10:14:23 AM »
I'm taking a trip driving up PCH for a week and I'm hoping to bring my 11'2 Starboard Blend strapped to my roof with steelcores.  I don't have a board bag and was hoping not to have to buy one, but the board would be sitting on top of my car in the sun for the majority of the week.  If I keep the vent completely open and only close it when I'm in the water, will my board be ok in the sun?  Or am I asking for trouble?

At the very least, I would throw a white towel on top when the car is parked in the sun.

I agree with Bean.  That's the least you should do, but let me also say that I'm about the cheapest person on the planet so my general inclination was not to shell out $170 for a good board bag...until I thought about the $1700 I spent on my Starboard.  Now it lives in there all the time unless I'm on the water.  Probably nothing would happen to your board on top of your car for a week, but I tend to err on the side of protecting my toys whenever I can.

Someone else is probably more informed than I on this, but I thought adjusting the vent plug is primarily something someone needs to do with altitude shifts.  The drive up PCH is pretty moderate (I live on the central coast) so you won't have many extreme or prolonged temps unless you're stopping inland somewhere.  Have fun!

I was neglectful with my Blend for a summer and the finish on the wood portion on the deck began to peel away from areas where I had minor scratches.  Turned out ok...I just wax the deck now and am trying to learn to walk it.  But I'd rather it still look good.

That red board won't need high temps to heat up, just good sun and no wind.  It'll get hot, very hot, fast.  Maybe a white cotton sheet for when you are parked?

For about ten bucks you can buy a 12'x4' painters dropcloth.

Buy two, tape or sew the edges together and make a low tech, ghetto board bag.

Is So Cal, you can go topless. One of the local surfers makes and sells these for boards and SUPs.

I've been planning on getting one, but haven't yet. They look pretty cool though.

Wow. Its 5:30 here now and its still 95 degrees F outside and my board has been sitting on the racks on top my car since 8am except when I got a 2 hour session at lunch time. I never have to worry about it. My stuff is built right and is designed to be well used and abused. 3 years of R&D and the bugs are out of my stuff. I have old boards I built 2-3 years ago that I leave in a sunny spot in the backyard just to see if they will have a issue and they don't have any just a couple of shades less white.

I wouldn't worry about it much, this is southern Cal., and up to central Cal. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, fog, and lots of it this year, just like last year.  Keep the plug open when on top of your car, and you should be just fine.  Sometimes the SUP purests are a lot like the stock brokers, it only takes a little to set off a panic.
It takes a quiver to do that.

That is an excellent idea.  My f-16 gets covered if it's going to sit in the sun all day on my truck.  The board bag was great protection, but too much work to use.  Just like the picture above,  I chopped out enough to cover my board while it's on the truck.  A few light straps keep it in place if it's windy.  The sun is a killer here.
