Last year I injured my shoulder and couldn't do anything for months.  I let myself go, and got up to 240 lbs.  After I started paddling again, I was riding a high volume 8-6.  It was fun to paddle and floated me well.  Now I'm on a much trimmer 8-6 and am still stoked.  Riding shorter boards is fun, but it takes much more effort.  On days that I just want to take it easy, I stick to a 9-6 or 10-0.  Of course every board is different, so try a few different ones.  Volume distribution is the key.  You can have two boards with the same outline and dimensions, but if the shaper doesn't know how to distribute the volume correctly, one will be a rip stick and the other a pig.  There is an art to it.

By the way, if anyone out there wants to shed some pounds quickly, try a 30 day juice fast and then a raw diet for 30 days.  I lost 35 pounds and didn't do a single sit-up.  It's been 3 months and the weight is still gone.  I'm stoked.   ;D

Here are some pics of the boards.  The yellow one is the high volume 8-6.  The white one is the trim version.

I ride my C4 or Coreban Cruiser.  Both are 11-6. The Cruiser is 30" and a bit more stable, so that's what I put most of my time on.  Turns nice and and gets good speed.

I've paddled a 10-6 Rocket in the flat water and it floated me fine, but I like to put on some distance paddling as a warm up or when it's flat and 10-6 would not be fun for that.  I'm somewhere below 250# and hoping to get back to 220 this year.

This is what my friend, Steve S, is into... Steve is 6'4" and 230 lbs (probably closer to 240 with all that neoprene on) but he loves the Nah Skwell 7'8" Sup-Fish...          Later,    JD

This vid is of a small micro-surf day but he can make the best of it:

I've sold a bunch of our Choppers to guys in the 250lbs range and they all seem to love it... nothing but good comments. Where are you located?

Steve,

Action Watersports is holding a demo day at Mother's Beach on Saturday, 8am - 10am.

I stopped by the store today and they said they are bringing a few brands, Coreban, PSH, E3 and maybe the C4 Inflatable.  It's only in the flatwater, but it will give you some idea of stability, etc.

You really need to take into consideration your local conditions.  There's a lot of post on this threads that are throwing out small very small numbers for some big guys but if they were sup'ing where I am, often in the wind and chop on the Texas coast, they wouldn't be on such small boards.  When it's glassy here (on the rare occasion) yeah, brake out the 9'-4", but in the chop and slop, good luck unless you're on the 10'-6" or better.  (Unless you're the kind that sits in the line up then pops up only when the sets come in)

My take on the equation:  weight x experience x local conditions
