Jonathan's new K15.
« on: May 08, 2010, 07:31:25 AM »
Jonathan put his new Starboard K15 into the water today for the first time and Paul had his Starboard 12'6" Pin.. They looked like twins.

Here's my pictures.

Wow, those boards look very crisp and clean.  I love the graphics.

The 15 reminds me of Stuey's penetrator 572, (one of my all-time favorites).

Way to go Jonathan, that is a fine looking board.

how does the K15 compare to other race boards out in the USA and Australia, here in the UK we have a serious lack of good race boards so the starboard k15 is winning everything.

Great looking boards.

DJ & Jonathan, any chance you can do a review of the Starboard K15 vs the Naish Javelin?

I'm very interested to see how they compare to each other & I'm sure there are heaps of other people on this forum that would also be very interested?

I'm sure we can do that.. We might even put GoPro's on each board and point them at each other so you can see the real side by side comparison..  ;D .. Welcome to the Zone WorlSUP

I'm not sure if this is the same board posted in the Gear section under K-15 - The Widow Maker or not. As I posted there I would like to get some feedback about where others are finding the most efficient place to stand on the board. I am straddling the mast insert and have the best control from there.

Just came in from a fun paddle on the K15, paddled out straight into a 15 knot wind that has had the whole bay to build up wind fetch in. So the waves were 2 or 3 foot faces and messy and choppy. Feels like a Cadillac through this stuff with the nose going way under but clearing nicely and sometimes big gushes of water getting past the foam wave diverter, the standing deck clears super fast so you don't even notice it. Ground my way straight upwind for about 40 minutes (getting dark!) then turned for the fun part.

Down-wind - first impression, harder to get onto a wave than the Surf Race which just seems to suck down the wave like nothing I've ever ridden. Keeping in mind that these waves were super junky, eventually got my timing a little better, stepped forward to push that big bow down and started to get some action, standing forward it is very responsive to foot steering and that lets you just keep paddling and steer by depressing one or other rail. Then suddenly I'm on, feels fast, step back quite a bit into surfing stance and just take off, hootin and hollerin to myself out there and it just kept going and going and going, considering the pathetic little waves just great fun. Feels stable and easy to steer in surfing stance and if the nose goes under you hardly notice it. Don't get me wrong it's not an F16, but equally I just can't imagine an F16 getting onto these little waves. Actually the feeling of momentum and just keeping on going reminds me more of the F18 I tried on a Maliko run last year - you just feel unstoppable.

It's going to be really fun to try it on a more serious down-winder, pearling doesn't seem to be an issue at all, I could imagine it tripping  maybe but that certainly hasn't happened yet so maybe I'm worrying for nothing.

Good fun!
