Starboard - Race Boards
« on: May 07, 2010, 02:57:13 PM »
All the Starboard Race boards just showed up this morning.
Managed to get them a few days early from the trucking company . . . all it took was a case of Kokanee.

Easy could you give me some flatwater time comparisons?  My local dealer said the new Freerace 29" was only about 1.4% faster than his favorite Pin.  He got his Tuesday morning.

Good luck with your personal the New, I couldn't ride it with any side chop/swell at all.

I would love to hear feed back on the 31"w Free Race if you have one.  Especially from someone new and big (230-250)

Hey Easy, you must be stoked to get these boards. I would be very interested in your feedback comparing the PIN to the SurfRace and The NEW. I have just been on an 18km DW on the old Starboard Point - it was a little tricky in the cross swells. It was difficult to find the sweet spot for riding the swells as the further back on the board you went the more tippy it became. Looking forward to your updates.

Paddled the NEW last night for about an hour.

First impressions - - it's freaking FAST!

The 25" width took a few minutes to get used to.
Little bit narrower stance than normal - and of course it is a little less stable than my current flat water board (Starboard Pin).

First impression was that it went as fast, if not faster than the Pin - - with WAY less effort.

Did have my Garmin with me - and will get the data tonight.

Saw a max speed of 9.1 kmh in about a 100 Meter sprint.
Had a GoPro in the FCS water bottle mount and will try and get the footage up tonight as well.

Going to paddle the Surf Race and Free Race tomorrow.

Sure is cool to try something SO different.

Short video of me last night.
Realized that I had my feet up against the scupper holes - so the water couldn't get out.
Moved them a fraction and 90% of the water drained out.

Nice.. Did you notice when you paddle really hard if the water gets pushed forward off the nose because it seems so blunt compared to the other more piercing noses like the Javelin?

It does create a bit of a "bow wake" - not very much and only when your weight is forward and really pushing hard.

Took my Surf Race out in really bad conditions, gusting up to 25 knots, raining, choppy. We have a local breakwater and its possible to get behind the wall for some shelter then come out into the exposed wind waves at the end of the wall, pretty much going off yesterday with 5 or 6' foot faces but super choppy with reflection off the rock wall.

Well once again the Surf Race amazed me, the thing is just so incredibly stable in such a wild sea state, I actually think it is not only the sunken deck it's the whole shape of the board that just makes it so forgiving in chop.

So work my way out into the maelstrom turn it down a face and suddenly it's all sunshine and light as the board gets straight onto the wave, it really does surf surprisingly well. A normal surf board in those conditions would have been really difficult with the regular nose getting slapped around by the chop. did my little laps of back upwind along the wall and into the waves for about an hour and a half and didn't fall off once, not only incredibly stable for a 26 1/2" wide board, just incredibly stable - period.

The Surf Race is my new best friend :)

That is great to hear about the SurfRace in such challenging conditions. We have a 4km race tonight in 20-25 knot NE with 1m+ swell - I just wish I had a SurfRace instead of the Point. I think we will get to see a demo SurfRace next month. After this review I am champing at the bit to try one out. Cheers.

Well it looks like I have yet another board I "have to" buy. Do you think it will perform well for a guy in the 220-225lb. range?

Well that's a hard one for me to answer, I'm only 145! But my friend Dave has paddled it on flat water and he is 225, it looked absolutely fine, it has very beefy rails and I think that is part of the reason it is so stable. Dave could rock it to 45 degrees side to side and it would just pop back.

I am 200 and have paddled the surf race a couple of times now.
Quite stable.

The NEW seems to have more dynamic stability[?]   (stability once it is moving).
When it is moving fast the NEW seams like it is on rails.

Will be taking out the 31" Free Race tomorrow morning and will report back.
