Low definitely seems to be the way to go. Way easier to load up. I also know a guy who uses a volvo station wagon and someone else who uses a Maxima Station wagon. Unfortunately I need a truck to get along in life. Maybe I'll lower my truck :)

I have the Thules on my F350 in Portland--they work fine for big boards, never seen the need for anything on the roof except when I was pulling a trailer and needed the boards shoved way forward. Hauled 2 Race (F18 and Starboard Point) and two surfboards to SD for the BOP, no sweat.

On the Funmobile (jeep) I have a homemade rack with arms that can extend and reverse for carrying canoes and kayaks. I've had two kayacks and six boards on it, along with sails, masts, booms and two bikes.

I'd if you have fabrication skills I'd consider a homemade. I wouldn't attach anything to both the bed and roof unless the setup has some give. The F350 has a hell for stout frame, but the broom I jammed between bed and cab wound up cracked from bed movement. Even before it broke I noticed it moving around from road twists.

Thanks bill for the advise . I will definetly take the cab and truck bed movement into consideration. I have a few friends with one Thule on the truck bed and one rack on the cab and there has been no problems. Oahu does not have many off road spots for Down wind !!

Would love to see pic's of your Jeep set up, sound sweet and functional :)

Here's a Trac Rac system without the track.  I've seen it on Ebay for $429 and $125 shipping to Hawaii.

How hard is it to take them off? I was lookig at The G2's at Go bananas they are about $525 for a pait or $ 280 for one. They look SOLID.

Those are the T-Rac Pro model. The newest model is the T-Rac G2. The top bars on the G2 are wider than the Pro. You need to modify the Dakine rack pads to fit.

That is correct. I bought the Thule clamps for my Subaru, but they fit great onto the upper side bars of the lumber rack also. I can also fit 2 longboards on the lumber rack portion under the Thule setup. I will see if have some closeups. Easy & simple retrofit.

Does anyone have the Yakima Outdoorsman 300 with the 66 inch bars ?  Trying to decide between the T-Rac G2 and the Yakima.

I've seen and installed the Yakima Outdoorsman racks with bars.  I own a T-Rac Pro.  In my opinion, T-Racs are much more stable, plus they are aluminum and won't rust like the Outdoorsman.

WOW !!  that is one cool way to travel Bill. Obviously on a truck you like Thules ?? I have not seen a Jeep with a set up like that , until now. Way cool. What is the big PVC pipes for ? Sails ? Looks like you need some bigger pipe then you could store some paddles :)

The tubes are for sails and masts. The L shaped arms in the rack telescope out to the position shown for big stuff, or in for boards, and the arms can be rotated down. Works great. It's getting a little rusty after 9 years of use, but it still works. Next time I'll build it out of stainless or aluminum.

The trailer is a 34 foot Airstream I bought on ebay and then gutted--built a custom interior that holds my race car, tools and parts, and also has separate living space. A lot of work, but it was fun building it and using it for a tour of all the major north american road racing circuits.
