stand up paddle fishing
« on: September 07, 2009, 11:31:52 AM »
Anyone have experience with SUP fishing. Beginning of this summer, I witness spanish & blues tearing apart this huge school of bait. No surf, super clean, & nothing else to do, I fetched my 6' light tackle spinning reel, made me a one foot leader with treble hook on the end, and proceded to nearest bait ball. I kept at least 25' away from school down wind and casted directly on other side of the school. As soon as I would faul hook a pogie in the side, Id reel the bait out to the edge and wait for a strike, which took every bit of ten seconds. SLAM!! Spanish Mackeral about 14" 15", now here's the danger! Get that sucka on board ASAP, because we all know bigger fish eat bigger bait, and they love that struggle of a hooked fish. Dont worry, I was spooked at first site of 6' shadows under neath, or hell, when I drifted directly in the middle of the bait ball. But the reward out weighed the risk, after all, the sharks were feeding on the bait, not SUPers. Had one of the best times with a stand up paddle! I filled up a cooler full of blues and several spanish in less than an hour. I had support, a friend took my kayak out with cooler and needle nose on board, and would de-hook my catch for me. Id hook one, then he'd come along side, and Id put the catch in the kayak. I kept the rod between my feet until I reached my position, then set the paddle down beside the rod, then cast. I dont recommend doing this alone, especially off shore. Maybe one day, Ill experience what this cat got to experience! Check youtube link. I did land a small shark about 4' and actually got him on board. He took me for a little ride, but mostly stuck to the bottom. Strong little suckers when they're green!

Frigging awesome video, man!!!  I was down in Cabarete, Dom Rep this past June and some of the local supr's were into fishing off their sups' but they would go way off shore and I couldn't tell if they were getting any hits or not...  Good luck and let us know how the fishing goes...  Later,   JD

Technically, this guy is disqualified as a stand up paddle boarder. He has no paddle, and also he paddled to the fish on his knees and used his hands. Me, I used a paddle, and stood up the whole session. Im now working my way to a 30 lb King Mackeral this fall when the bait runs thick. Stay tuned for the Go Pro Helmet cam video coming this fall!!

I've hooked into blues and stripers on my board...lots of fun. Keep thinking about a big bluefin though.....that would be a ride.

so ... how anyone figured out how to strap a crate to the board without using tie-down mounts?  I've tried doing the strap-around-the-board thing and always get disconcerting slippage.  Is there another solution?

a thought popped into my head just now: maybe stick the strap through a bicycle inner tube and the tube will grab the rails.  hmmm.

thanks for that.  but, anyway, i'm more of a DIY guy, if I can get it figured out ...

plus, from what i can tell at the site, the regular clamp mounts don't work on big fat SUP rails, so they've come out with a stick-down mount system, which is what I'm trying to avoid ...

Linter,
These work great ,cheap, can get them clear and small enough you can still surf without knowing they are there, stuck mine on the far outside and use a small bungee to hold the crate down. Here is a couple pics with them on my Munoz

linter-

You are right. I didn't realize that it was a longboard. Good call.

CHill: pretty slick!  now ... what's your crate set-up look like?  Have you figured out how to attach a fish finder?  ::)

Hey Dave, I paddled out of Rowena here in Oregon yesterday through a big grass flats that was FULL of big carp. Hundreds of them--mebbee tousands. I'm coming back next week with the bow for some serious carp plugging.  good crawdad bait and tons of fun. can't wait to try bowfishing on a SUP

also, paddled up the white salmon river last week and it was full of steelhead. thousands of them, looked like a smelt run. Biggest steelhead run on record. the old record was 14,000. we've had three days of more than 17,000 and three of more than 34,000. Unbelievable. they are everywhere.
