Sharing spots in Google Earth
« on: October 26, 2007, 12:07:29 AM »
I'm not sure if this is something you would want to implement or not Randy but what do you think about sharing SUP spots in Google earth. I was looking at a spot on Cape Cod that is not very accessible to regular surfing but is very reachable by SUP. Here is the image but it would be great to be able to embed the kmz file.

Hi Stoneaxe,
I would be happy to look at this idea.  Could you show me a site that is imbedding the maps in the manner you are describing?  I have not played with their API, but I am sure it is pretty straight forward.

Best, Randy

I don't know of any that are embeding the google earth directly. It's probably not setup for that now that I think about it. You might need to share the files on a sharing site and embed the link to the kmz file.

I know you can embed google map. http://web.mac.com/capecodsurfchallenge/ccsc/DIRECTIONS.html

This is the code to embed from google maps into a website. Not sure how it could be made to work in the comments.

Hi StoneAxe,

It would seem to me that to create a useful service, we would need to have a full map that users could add their own points of interest to.  These would then be saved, a dynamically generated location list would be created, and a useful "World Stand Up Surf Map" would be born.  Any thoughts?

I'm out of my league when you start talking about dynamically generated location lists.

It would probably be easiest to implement as a searchable index by continent/location. A link to the google maps location would be something anyone could generate with ease. I looked at the google earth community but it gets too involved I think.

Hi Stoneaxe,

I haven't forgotten about you.  I am doing abit of research on how to best go about this.  I think that this might be useful for a few functions.

1. It could allow shops, rental centers, etc to display their locations.

2.  It could allow the list of appropriate beginner locations that we had all discussed earlier.

3.  It could open up some surfable remote location sharing that may not be readily available to those new to an area.

4. It could list the core spots, with defference to the fact that these maps (on other, surf specific, sites) have tended to heavily congregate already popular areas.

Let me know what you think.

One way we could go about this:

http://www.standupzone.com/map.htm

I could post the login on all members profile pages, allowing any of us to add spots.

Very very cool. I added the Chatham harbor break that I'm planning on hitting this weekend. If I don't kill myself (looking like it could be pretty big for this newb) I'll post it in the sessions category Sunday.
