Sothern Maine - Surf Foil and Wing-Ding
« on: May 09, 2022, 07:48:23 AM »
Planning my annual family trip to maine - switching from central maine to Portland area.  My central Maine spot was Popham, which was a solid spot for a few different swell directions.  Looking for some southern Maine guidance.  I'll be there for a few weeks.  Advanced prone and dinger.

For surf i can figure out what beaches there when there's swell etc.  For Ding can i just hop down one of the portland area boat ramps like casco bay and go for a sail?  Thanks for the heads up!

I'll add that i will of course act as an ambasador of the sport with the highest respect for local rules and the safety of other water users.  I'll treat all spots with the respect i'd treat my home break.  (I know i'm a real prick when someone shows up at my spot and even comes close to fucking it up for the rest of us)

I surfed York Beach and Ogunquit for 12 years...plenty of space, good waves , no-one was foiling when I was there...I had just gotten into wing foil but then we moved to Boothbay, Maine last summer. I Will be wing foiling Popham and Reid State Parks for sure.

Casco Bay seems like a popular spot from some of the foil groups..some guys ride the ferry wake

As you well know there are some extreme tides which can alter plans...I can wing foil right off my dock in 12 ft water in Boothbay at high tide, but at low it's about  2ft

There are other beaches south of Portland.. Scarborough, Maine popular with foilers. also a very active what's App Maine/NH foil group you should join..those guys have every spot from Seapoint, NH to Nova Scotia mapped out

Badger , a member on the Standup Zone  is wing foiling Southern Maine and I am sure he will add some expertise.

if you head up to Boothbay area give me a shout.

I meant Seabrook,NH but Seapoint Beach is a very good spot in Kittery Point, Maine. Rocky but great access to open ocean

Pine Point and Ferry Beach at the north end of Old Orchard Beach is a hot spot for winging. Swells roll in over a long sandbar and there is plenty of flatwater in the harbor and marsh. Higgins Beach in Scarborough and the rivermouth at Ogunquit Beach are good for prone foiling.

I'm down in coastal NH so Pine Point and Scarborough are kind of a long drive for me. I often go to Harbor Park in Wells which is closer and an awesome flatwater spot. It's about halfway between Portland and Portsmouth.

Google Satellite is a great way to scope out the coast.

Welcome! Tons of options in the greater Portland area. As the guys above have mentioned, Scarborough has quite a few choices based on tide and wind direction. Higgins Beach is south facing and gets better swell than most nearby areas. It's a great spot for prone foiling (rivermouth at east end is a prime foil spot). Scarborough Beach State Park also gets good swell and is a great wing venue in sideshore winds; any tide works. Saco Bay is the jewel, stretching ~7 miles from Prouts Neck aka Black Point to Hills Beach in Biddeford. It is kind of a half-moon shape so the best location on any given day depends on wind direction. Swell is somewhat less than Higgins but can still be pumping depending on swell direction.

There are also many options in the Casco Bay area. East End Beach is on Portland's eastern promenade, Back Cove is a high tide flatwater area, and there are parks in Freeport and Cumberland.

Maine has a very complex coast and the are literally thousands of spots available. Water access can be tricky in affluent areas but the beauty of the wing is you don't need much.

Agree with above, and:

Back cove and east end beach are popular flat water windsurfing/ding spots and good for a short window.

Thanks for the fantastic responses!  I’ll probably DM some folks when I’m up there to hopefully grab a session with a crew while I’m there!  Post session refreshments on ne!  (This is the way)

You must be Nick. My friend Charley says you have been shredding at Higgins. Did he send you the local WhatsApp group link?
