Foil Wing Screws Coming Loose While Riding
« on: March 23, 2020, 08:57:10 AM »
I have a Gong XXL Pro foil set-up and recently I've found that no matter how hard I tighten the 2 bolts on the front wing that they still come a bit loose after 20 minutes of Winging and the front wing gets wobbly. It's no fun to ride with a wobbly front wing! Has anyone experienced this before and what was the remedy? Loc-tite or plumbers tape?

Use Tef Gel. it’s sticky and should stop that.

I used Loctite "blue" 242 (removable) previously that I liked and worked really well, until I recently got a jar of Tef-Gel which I've just started using for a couple sessions, but that I don't have enough experience with to say if I like it over the Loctite or not.

The one thing I can say about the two in comparison...the Loctite goes on a whole lot easily and cleaner than the Tef-Gel. The Tef-Gel is definitely sticky, and seems to be able to fling itself all over the back of my van whenever I take the cap off the jar.  :-\

Me: 6'1"/185...(2) 5'1" Kings Foil/Wing Boards...7'10 Kings DW Board...9'6" Bob Pearson "Laird Noserider"...14' Lahui Kai "Manta"...8'0" WaveStorm if/when the proning urges still hit.

Also... Add the "top third screw mod" to the top of the wing. It makes a difference.

I'd used a drill bushing when drilling like this to protect the threads and center up the hole, but they do it without one here.

Fishman, where’d you get the drill bushing? I wanna do that and would rather not risk the threads if I don’t have to.

McMaster-Carr has some.
https://www.mcmaster.com/press-fit-drill-bushings

Outside dia 5mm is the right size (2mm inside is good)
I used scotch tape to make my standard size D bushing to get a good fit.
Colas used some 5mm OD copper tube. https://www.amazon.fr/Profil%C3%A9-cuivre-tube-4-1-longueur/dp/B00FX0RDRA

If you what you can use mine, send me a self address envelope...

I have found that big wings put a lot torque / leverage on the foil and the bolts can loosen up, same in bigger more powerful surf especially after a few wipeouts.

Have you tried bringing a small L key wrench into the water with you and tighten up after the bolts loosen?  I have found that doing this gets the bolts tight and they stay tight.  Also retapping to 8mm usually solves the problem.
Aloha, I welcome and appreciate all responses of positivity and good feeling.
