foil sup deck reinforcing
« on: May 07, 2019, 01:27:37 PM »
kia ora all, maybe someone here will have some secret knowledge to impart for a young grasshopper. Ive shaped a 5'10 x 27 x 4 1/2 dugout sup from cheap shitty polystyrene as with all my other boards and got 1 of 2 layers of 200g glass over the whole lot.
my question is would 1 layer of 200g carbon twill in between the 2 layers of glass be enough to stop the soft poly from denting underfoot? I was talking to an old charger a while back who swore by 1mm core mat for the deck reinforcing. i have some of that too but not quite sure what to do.
the carbon patch seems to have worked on my 13ft flat water board but im not sure if it will be stiff enough for pumping and what not

Have you considered a bamboo sandwich? Seems like bamboo laminate would be a good option for that if you’re bagging anyway.

I’d like to hear from others as well.

Sounds exotic, i dont have a bagging set up or bamboo but i do have plenty of core mat and carbon. Just not sure whether to do one or the other or both

Ah, I forget you’re in NZ. Bamboo veneer is pretty common around here.

Bagging is easier than you’d think. Hope you get to mess with it some time.

Sorry but I have no experience with the core mat man.

I would say a layer of 200g carbon between 200g glass would be pretty good especially if the carbon patch is big enough to catch the geometry of the sides of the 'pan' instead of just a small patch underfoot. My experience is also more flat water.

I suppose the scientific thing would be to make test panels and test them for weight and stiffness afterwards:

a. 2x200g glass
b. glass-carbon-glass
c. glass-coremat-glass
d. glass-veneer-glass

Please post up what you decide and some more shots of the board, it looks like a fun shape!

I ended up going with a carbon patch lapped half way up the cockpit sides as jrandy suggested. The boards getting a lil heavy from drinking too much resin so didnt really want to add more weight. I dont have any recent pics but there is only the transom to glass then shes ready for paint

Got a few coats of high build interprotect on, good enough for a wax up and test flight to find the foot strap locations.

Did you bog the blank?
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

No personal experience, but I do know that Dave Daum at Kings uses coremat on Daniel Hughes boards to keep them from being crushed from Dan's air attack.

He also uses it in some of his foil boards for the same reason.

And, as always, can do anything you like.

It sounds to me that the coremat would be the strongest as well as the easiest to laminate.

Good luck and let us know which path you follow and the results.
Let it come to you..

no bog pono, shes all glassed. just got a high build undercoat to seal the grain. i went with carbon on the floor to save on a bit of weight compared to core mat. the lam schedule is 2x 200g glass all over, 1x 200g carbon twill deck patch, 2 x 300g carbon bi ax + 1 x 200g carbon twill over the foil top and bottom. the decks borderline because the polystyrenes so soft but it should be ok once it gets a full deck pad

tried it out yesterday, what a sweet little board. heaps of bouyancy, stable as anything and paddles beautifully. super easy to pump up in flat water and handles like a prone board once up. gonna be magic with a couple foot straps and a deck grip

This is crazy cool. I didn't even appreciate what you were doing until I saw the video.

Definitely a pioneering effort.  I think I am there with you on the wax.  Light, quick removable.

I put it on a new board that DID NOT come with a deck pad.  I like the lightness.

Cheers boys its always a lot of work but man it feels good when you lift off. Wax and bootys works ok but it wears off so quick, a few waves and under my feet will be rubbed bare. I found some nsi (nsj?) Deck pads that have built in foot strap mounts, ill get one of those for it once im back home in a few months
