SUP fishing... (pic)
« on: March 12, 2009, 10:58:12 AM »
Went down to the East Cape, Baja in Feburary, first time there trying to figure out the fishing.   This is early in the season and the first two days were to windy to fish... the third day we were so hyper we were trying everything to get it figured out... got a couple of sieras and some other 3- 5 lb. fish...  then I got lucky, this fish towed me for over a 100 yds, too much fun, this is my first Rooster.  (catch and release) ... too much fun!

Nice rooster! Be fun to catch one of those on a board.

What a wuss that extreme fisherman guy is--his board gets towed to catch the fish. Get up and paddle that puppy, dude. I did like the part about jumping out of a copter though.

My new rod holder is a ten. simplest thing in the world, a little PVC pipe and a windsurfing mast base. So far it's the best setup I've tried. You can grab the rod anytime, and cast to a fish you see taking baitfish. Boomah. So far it's a five Popio rig, and it's early days. I'm wanting to get something big with it. I think I hooked an Ono trolling the other day, but i didn't have a steel leader, so the Ono has a lip decoration for a day or two and I'm out ten bucks.

I was using a pen 550 spinning reel with 15# test.  The rod was an oldie, a solid fiber glass lake rod, probably a $4.00 pole back in the 70's ( I like to give the fish a chance).  Caught the fish on a white surface iron, 6 in.   I was told by the locals that the way to get roosters is to use white poppers through the shoreline.  When they get hooked they usually head for deep open water... perfect for board fishing.  I was talking fishing with a friend and he said that the rooster he hooked ran into his kayak 2 times... thats' the kind of fish it is, the fish went nuts.

Anyway, I would like to get to Hawaii and try for ulua...

Popio is just a small Ulua--under ten pounds. Haven't caught big one with a hook. shot some tho.

We too ,  South Carolina ,fish off the Stand Ups. Not big game fish but the small flats fish like Redfish, Trout and Flounder in the back water bays and marshes.  This summer I'll head out on the Ocean side and try my luck. I try to keep it simple; Board , paddle, pole and lures on light tackle..   K.I.S.S. ( Keep It Simple Stupid )

That Flat Stalker is something extreme...  Gibsup, thanks for the link.  Good stuff.

Michael, that sailfish video is scary, that fish was still hot when he cut it loose.  Unreal.

Boardfisher1 - good job on the catch and release. Nothing worse than people that kill for a picture and don't eat it. Total respect for you.
