Where are the split boards?
« on: April 03, 2018, 10:39:28 PM »
Given the large size of a standard SUP board, why aren't there any split boards?  Nobile makes split kiteboards (both twin tip and surf style) and kiteboards are way smaller.  A board that split into two or three sections would be easier to transport and would be a better alternative to an inflatable.  There used to be at least one company that made split boards (Infinity, maybe?) but I can't seem to find any now.

Generally, they sucked.

I thought the same, but the construction of a kiteboard lends itself to splitting. I'm not trusting a split SUP over a reef break somewhere, same for an inflatable.

Although - with a kiteboard, I've never needed a split board as the golf bag trick works every time.

Pope Bisect (Tri-Sect for SUP) was probably about as good as it would get but not much better than this:

you mean something like this?
you can have one if you're willing to fork out the money. :)

But they do make sense, though inflatables making better & better argument lately.

I've seen the Carbon Compact. It's pretty cool. Buy one, I'm sure he's not selling a ton.

If we want something, we gotta vote with our dollars.

The Carbon Compact looks pretty sweet and those prices are very reasonable. Would like to get some reports on the long-term.

We sold a number of split Starboard and Imagine SUPs to folks with airplanes, boats, no car city living with bus transport, and smaller living spaces...etc...
They worked pretty good...better than inflatables...we have a couple that we would sell...

The Starboard Transporter (Blend) even had a mast track...and, we flew one down to Punta Mita for free on Alaska Airlines...

So there's no real reason other than demand that split boards don't seem to exist much anymore.  I guess most SUPpers are in the upper income brackets and can afford the extra storage and transportation costs that large boards require.  Even so, wouldn't you guys like a split board for air travel to exotic destinations?  For me, I'd like one so I could carry it via cargo bike since I no longer own a car.  While it is possible to carry my current full size SUP on my cargo bike, it is just too big and would be very susceptible to side winds and too cumbersome for the distances I would have to travel.   The carbon compact looks good, but is a bit too expensive for me.

T B, everything is a compromise.  It all depends upon where you are going and what is available there.  The mainstream surf spots seem to have a pretty good supply of rentals and demos.  Great way to try different stuff.

As far as the bike goes, have you checked out Beasho’s rig?  His bike is electric, but the same rack would work with human power as well.

Sunova racers are testing the 14’ Allwater model in two pieces version in some races.

Where?
Right here:

Sunova has partnered with "Carbon Compact" and is proving the value of this system on the World Tour.

ALL Sunova's are available as 2 piece travel boards

Everyone is super stoked about these boards  :)
