Foil board on the roof rack at 65mph Results?
« on: March 06, 2018, 09:57:02 AM »
I re-purposed a sup I no longer use as a foil board.  Now that I have it ready to go I'm wondering what is going to happen if I put on my roof rack and go zooming around at 65mph.

Anyone transport their foilboard, with the foil installed, on the roof rack?

Too many for the rack

Well....... It's a wing. Wings are designed to fly. Somethings got to give at some point. You be be our test case. Maybe mount a GoPro, and let us see what happens at what speed. I bet it will hum like crazy... at first.

On the up side, it may improve your radio reception?

Oh, and Chicks dig it.
It's not overhead to me!

You should worry more about driving into your garage than doing 65 mph!

Ask anyone who carries a bike on their roof. Or better, anyone who works in customer service for a bike company.

BTW: Once you’re up to speed you may be able to remove the straps. The board may well be pressed on your roof rack enough to do away with them.

There is simply no way to transport these things.  Someone observed "Its like carrying around a Christmas tree with the lights on."

This is why I use a bicycle.

With regards to the lift water is 800X more dense than air.  Lift is directly proportional to surface area, but increases as the Velocity^2.

So the foil in 8 mph of water --> 16 mph --> 32 mph --> 64 mph would have 4^3 power or 64X more lift than at 8 mph in WATER.

However the AIR is 1/800 times as dense to ROUGHLY 64/800 = 1/12 as much lift in 64 mph of AIR as 8 MPH of water.  You should be OK but . . . . I wouldn't drive across country like that.

I think it would be a great way to transport your foil.  At 65mph, you might even be able to fly your car like you fly your board.  :)

I'll report back on which reply to my post was correct.  I suspect it will be running into a stationary object.

I've done it often, it's kind of the standard way to carry a foil on a truck here in Maui, but it's not easy getting it up there. I generally take my foil off unless I'm going a short distance. Not because I'm concerned about lift, but it's just easier for me. Lots of folks don't like working the Tuttle too much. After beveling the edges of the glass on the box my mast slips in and out easily and tightens to a shake-free lock.

Beasho, your calculations don't include compression effects (Reynolds number) but close enough. The lift is negligible and it presses down, not up. It's a little spolier.

If you angle the foil right, you'll improve your MPGs.

I have found that at 80mph air molecules, pollen, rain drops and other airborne obstacles are inconsequential.

I think a branch at moderate speed would do that to a foil.  I ran into my garage with a bike on the cars roofs rack and only the car and garage were damaged.

Holy Schnockers!  How did this happen?

There is a bit of a weak-link going into the tail wing.

From what I heard, the foil and board were strapped to a car rack and they hit a section of carport....sad
